Where have my downloaded photos gone?

It depends on which app saved the picture, and the gallery is often the last place it shows up clearly. A picture saved from a browser or an email usually lands among your downloads rather than with the photos you took, and one downloaded from Google Photos can be filed under the day you downloaded it. Here is where each app's own help sends the picture.
Saved from Chrome
Chrome's Android help: "Touch and hold what you want to download, then tap Download link or Download image."
The result "will be saved in your default download location", and Google's tip for finding it again is to
"open the Files app"; Chrome also lists everything under More › Downloads
(Download a file, Android, read 3 October 2026).
Android's developer guide gives downloaded files a home and a collection of their own — "Downloaded files, which
are stored in the Download/ directory" — listed apart from the collection it fills with images,
"including photographs and screenshots"
(Access media files from shared storage, read 3 October 2026).
Saved from Gmail
For an attachment, Gmail's help is one tap: open the message and tap Download. A picture sitting inside the message body takes longer: "Touch and hold the photo", "Tap View image", tap the photo, then More › Save (Open & download attachments in Gmail, Android, read 3 October 2026). That page does not say which folder either route saves to — it is silent on the location. The quickest way to catch it is Files by Google's Recents, which Google describes as "your recently added, downloaded, and modified files" (View your files, read 3 October 2026).
Saved from WhatsApp
WhatsApp's help puts incoming pictures in one place: "On Android, media files are automatically saved in your WhatsApp/Media folder", in internal storage if the phone has it and on the SD card if not (Finding media files, WhatsApp Help Center, read 3 October 2026). When they reach the folder but not the gallery, the checklist is on its own page.
Downloaded from Google Photos
Select the picture, then More › Download — and if the option is missing, Google's help explains why: "If the photo is already on your device, this option won't appear." The detail that sends people hunting comes at the end of the same page: "Based on the time the photo or video is downloaded, your operating system can assign a new timestamp to the file itself" (Download photos or videos to your device, Android, read 3 October 2026). A holiday picture from years ago, downloaded this morning, may therefore sit at today's date in a gallery sorted by date. Google's page does not name the folder the copy goes to; it is silent on that too.
Why the gallery seems not to have them
Samsung's troubleshooting page names this case directly: "Pictures downloaded from some apps may not appear in Gallery. Sometimes, downloaded images will appear in the Download folder but not in the main Picture tab or in other folders, like Camera." Its fix is to tap Albums, then Downloads. Where an app keeps its folder closed to other apps, Samsung suggests using My Files "to copy the content to the Pictures folder" (Pictures will not display in the Gallery app, read 3 October 2026). How a gallery decides what to show.
If Adinand Auto File Sorter is installed
Then the answer may be ours. Pictures sitting loose in Downloads with a .jpg, .jpeg,
.png, .webp or .gif extension are moved, on a Sort Now or on the Pro
schedule, to Downloads › Sorted Files › Images; a picture with any other extension, such as
.heic, goes to Others. Sort History lists every file a run moved, and the most recent
sort can be undone for free. A download still arriving is left where it is: the app skips anything changed in the
last 30 seconds.
