Why can't I see my WhatsApp images in the gallery?

Either the photographs were never saved to the phone, or they are on the phone and something is telling the gallery not to show them. Four causes, in the order worth checking. Every WhatsApp quotation below is from one Help Center article, How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone (read 23 September 2026).

1. Media visibility is off

"WhatsApp automatically saves audio, video and photos sent to your phone. The Media visibility option is turned on by default." If someone has turned it off — Settings > Chats > Media visibility — WhatsApp stops "automatically saving media to your device's local storage", so new pictures never reach the gallery. You can switch it back on "at any time if you want to revert to WhatsApp automatically downloading audio, video and photos". The article does not say whether that brings back pictures that arrived while it was off.

2. A single chat is set to No

This is the one people miss, because the global setting looks correct. Media visibility can be set per conversation: from the chat, tap the contact or group name, then "Tap Media visibility > No > OK". And the global switch does not reset those choices — WhatsApp's note under it reads "Changing this setting won’t affect any previous auto-download choices you’ve made for specific chats or groups". So if one group's pictures are missing and everything else is fine, check that group.

3. A .nomedia file

Android defines .nomedia as a file "signaling the media scanner to ignore media in the containing directory and its subdirectories" (MediaStore — Android Developers, read 23 September 2026). WhatsApp documents it as a deliberate trick: create one "in the WhatsApp images folder" and "this will hide all your WhatsApp photos from your phone's gallery". Their own instructions say to go to Images/WhatsApp Images/ and "Create a file named .nomedia, including the period" — and to reverse it, "simply delete the .nomedia file".

4. The gallery has not caught up

Android's documentation says the system "automatically scans an external storage volume and adds media files" to its collections (Access media files from shared storage, read 23 September 2026); it does not say how quickly. If the files are there and the gallery is behind, a restart is a harmless thing to try. If one folder stays absent while others update fine, go back to cause 3.

Where the files are while all this is happening

"On Android, media files are automatically saved in your WhatsApp media folder. If you have internal storage, the WhatsApp folder is located in your internal storage. If you don’t have internal storage, the folder will be on your SD card or external SD card." If the pictures were saved, a file manager will show them there whatever the gallery is doing — which is the quickest way to tell causes 1 and 2 (never saved) from causes 3 and 4 (saved, but not shown). The opposite problem

For a lot of people the complaint runs the other way: every forwarded meme and every group's screenshots land in the gallery mixed in with their own photographs. That is media visibility working as designed, and the per-chat setting is the tool for it — switch it off for the noisy groups and leave it on where you want the pictures.

The short version

Check the four in order: the global Media visibility switch, then the individual chat's own setting, then a .nomedia file in Images/WhatsApp Images/, then give the gallery a restart's worth of time to catch up. Looking in the WhatsApp media folder with a file manager first tells you which half of the list you are in: pictures there but not in the gallery, or never saved at all.
