How do I sort photos in the Android gallery?

A gallery is not one folder — it gathers images from several. Android's developer documentation says images, "including photographs and screenshots", are stored in the DCIM/ and Pictures/ directories, and downloaded files in Download/ (Access media files from shared storage, read 23 September 2026). Google Photos shows the device side of that under Collections, then On this device (Take a screenshot or record your screen, read 23 September 2026). That is why the grid feels disordered: pictures you took, pictures a chat saved and screen captures all arrive in it, wherever they came from.

Sorting inside the gallery: albums and order

In Google Photos, a photo's place in the main view comes from its date. Google's help describes changing a backed-up photo's date and timestamp, and notes that "Photos taken before 4 AM are sorted into the previous day" (Edit your photos, read 23 September 2026). It does not describe a way to drag photos around in that main view.

Albums are where manual order lives. The steps, as Google writes them: open the album; "At the bottom, tap Edit album"; "At the top right, tap Sort by", with the options Newest, Oldest and Recently added; and "You can also drag items to move them" (Create & edit photo albums, read 23 September 2026). If the goal is a particular order for a particular set of pictures, an album does it without touching anything on disk. Why the main grid behaves differently.

The photos to leave where they are

Camera output. The photos you took are the ones a gallery exists for, and moving them is a decision to make deliberately, not as a side effect of tidying. This app never offers the camera folder as one of its watched-folder presets, so nothing from it is sorted unless you point the app there yourself.

The images that are actually a file job

The ones that arrived rather than the ones you made:

Chat downloads. WhatsApp's help, for one, says media it downloads automatically "will show up in your gallery" (How to configure auto-download, read 23 September 2026). Where those actually live.
Downloaded images. Chrome's help says a download "will be saved in your default download location" (Download a file, read 23 September 2026), so saved pictures sit next to your invoices and installers.
Screen captures. The same Android help page sends you to their own album: Collections, then On this device, then Screenshots. Finding that folder.

Those three are the ones worth getting out of the general image pile, because they are not memories — they are transport.

A structure that survives

Do the presentation work in albums, which are cheap and reversible, and reserve folder moves for the bulk categories you want out of the gallery entirely.

The limits, stated plainly. Categorisation is by file extension only — a .jpg is an Image because of its extension, and the app does not read what is inside a file to decide. Sorting never deletes anything, and every move is copy, verify, then remove the original, with an undo afterwards.
