How do I put Google Photos in chronological order?

The main Google Photos view is laid out by each item's date, and Google documents no way to drag it into a different order. So when the timeline looks wrong, what needs fixing is the dates, not the order.
Why yours looks out of order
Google's help pages do not list the reasons a picture lands in the wrong place. What they do document is that the date is editable, and how it is used: "Photos taken before 4 AM are sorted into the previous day" (Edit your photos — Android, read 23 September 2026). On a phone the route is one item at a time — tap a photo, then "At the top, tap More" and About (or swipe up), then "Next to the date and timestamp, tap Edit", choose a new date and time, and "Tap Save".
Two limits sit on that same page. "You can only change the date and timestamps in the Photos app for backed up photos." And the new date may stay inside Google Photos: "If you share the photo to other apps or download it, the photo may show the original date and time saved by your camera."
For a whole batch, the computer version of the page offers two options after you select items and choose Edit date & time: "Shift dates & times", which lets you specify a date for the first item and "automatically adjust the dates and times for the other items as relative to that", and "Set one date & time", to give them all the same one (Edit your photos — Computer, read 23 September 2026).
Where manual ordering does exist
Albums. The steps in Google's album help are: "Open the album.", "At the bottom, tap Edit album.", "At the top right, tap Sort by." — with the choices Newest, Oldest and Recently added — and, separately, "You can re-order photos, videos, text, and locations by dragging them" (Create & edit photo albums, read 23 September 2026).
So the honest answer to "I want these in the order I choose" is an album, not the main view.
The thing that is not a Google Photos question at all
If what you are actually looking at is a folder of image files — downloaded pictures, saved attachments, screen captures — then the app's timeline is not the tool. A folder has its own order. In Files by Google: "To sort your files, on the top right, tap More. Select Sort by", then pick "File name, Date, or Size" (View your files, read 23 September 2026). Sorting a list is a view: it changes what is at the top and moves nothing.
Which is the useful distinction here. Ordering a list by date costs nothing and is reversible. Filing into dated folders — one folder for each month, forever — is a structure you then have to live with, and it breaks the "all my images" question you actually ask. Type and date as two different jobs.
