# How do I put Google Photos in chronological order? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**The main Google Photos grid is chronological already, and it cannot be re-ordered.** What it orders by is each item's own date — so when the grid looks wrong, the ordering is not the problem. The dates are.

## Why yours looks out of order <ul> <li>**Scanned or forwarded pictures.** A photograph of a 1994 print is dated the day you scanned it, because that is when the file was made. A hundred of them all land in the same week of this year.</li> <li>**Images from chat apps.** Often carry the download date rather than the date the picture was taken, which is why a group's holiday photos cluster on the day someone shared them.</li> <li>**Edited copies.** Some editing apps write a new file with a new date and leave the original untouched, so you get the same picture in two places in the timeline.</li> <li>**A camera with the wrong clock.** Rarer than it used to be, and still the reason an entire trip can sit in 2019.</li> </ul> <p>The fix for all four is the same, and it is per-item: correct the date. Google Photos lets you edit the date and time of an item or a selection, and correcting the date is what moves it in the timeline — nothing else will.</p>

## Where manual ordering does exist <p>Albums. Google's help page *Edit an album* (read 22 September 2026) documents it: "Open the album, tap Edit album at the bottom, then tap Sort by at the top right", with the choices "Newest", "Oldest" and "Recently added", and you can also "manually drag items to rearrange them".</p> <p>So the honest answer to "I want these in the order I choose" is an album, not the main grid. One caveat worth knowing before relying on a hand-made order: a custom arrangement belongs to that album, and does not travel with the pictures if someone downloads them.</p>

## The thing that is not a Google Photos question at all <p>If what you are actually looking at is a folder of image files — downloaded pictures, saved attachments, screen captures — then the app's timeline is not the tool. A folder of files has its own order, and every Android file manager can sort a folder by date modified, usually behind a three-dot menu. That ordering is a view: it changes what is at the top of the list and moves nothing.</p> <p>Which is the useful distinction here. Ordering a list by date costs nothing and is reversible. Filing into dated folders — one folder for each month, forever — is a structure you then have to live and it breaks the "all my images" question you actually ask. ## Where Adinand Auto File Sorter fits <p>It files by type, not by date: it watches a folder — Downloads by default — and moves what lands there into `Downloads › Sorted Files`, under Documents, Images, Videos, Apps, Audio, Archives or Others.
