How do I organize photos on an Android phone?

Your photos exist in two systems at the same time: real folders on storage, and albums inside a gallery app. Most confusion about organising Android photos comes from editing one and expecting the other to change.

The folders, and what puts things in them

DCIM/Camera — what your camera takes, and the one folder every gallery app agrees about. It is also the folder this app doesn't touch: we don't sort your camera roll, and it will never appear in Sorted Files.
Pictures/Screenshots — screen captures, filed away from your photos on purpose. Where Android's own help sends you.
App folders — WhatsApp Images, Telegram, Downloads. Media that arrived rather than media you made. The WhatsApp case.

That last group is why a gallery fills with pictures you never took: auto-download saves them, and the gallery shows every image folder it finds.

Albums are a layer on top, not a move

In Google Photos, creating an album does not move a file anywhere — it is a label. Deleting an album does not delete the photos, and adding a photo to two albums does not duplicate it. Folder work, by contrast, is real: moving a file changes what every app sees. Decide which you are doing before you start, because "I organised my photos and now they are gone from the gallery" is almost always a folder move that a gallery has not rescanned yet.

A structure that survives

Keep camera output where it is — everything expects DCIM/Camera, and we don't move it. Do the organising in albums, which are cheap, reversible and searchable. Reserve folder moves for the bulk categories you want out of the gallery entirely: received chat media, downloaded images, memes. That distinction keeps the gallery about your life and the file system about storage.
