How do I free up space on Android without deleting apps?

Last reviewed: September 23, 2026 · Markdown version

Start by measuring, because the thing you would delete first is not necessarily the thing taking the space. Android's help page on storage starts in the same place, and its steps for clearing space include several that leave every app installed (Free up storage on your Android device, read 23 September 2026).

Measure before you delete

Settings shows what is actually using storage: "Open your device’s Settings app. Tap Storage. Select a category." The same page notes that "Some of these steps only work on Android 14 and up", so the wording on an older phone may differ. Work top-down from the biggest category. The measurement step is covered properly here, including why the number in Settings and the number in a cleaner app often disagree.

Where to look next

Files by Google has a card for each of the usual suspects, and each card's page gives the same shape of steps — Menu, Clean, the card, Select files, then "Move x file(s) to Trash":

  1. Downloads. Installers, PDFs opened once, three copies of the same attachment. The card is called "Delete downloaded files" (Delete downloaded files, read 23 September 2026); whether clearing it is safe has its own answer.
  2. Chat media. For WhatsApp there is a "Delete WhatsApp media" card (Delete WhatsApp media files, read 23 September 2026). Where that media lives.
  3. Big files. Video files are the obvious candidates, and the "Delete large files" card surfaces it without you having to hunt (Delete large files, read 23 September 2026).
  4. Duplicates. The same file downloaded twice, or saved from a chat and again from email. How to find them.

Nothing sent to Trash that way is deleted straight away — Files by Google holds it for 30 days before deleting it automatically (Move files to Trash & restore files from Trash, read 23 September 2026).

"Without deleting apps" — what Android offers

Three options on Android's storage page keep an app on the phone in some form. Clear cache "Deletes temporary data. Some apps may be slow the next time you open them." — unlike Clear storage, which "Permanently deletes all app data". Archiving removes an app you rarely use while "your personal data on the app will be saved" and "The app’s icon will remain on your device"; you switch it on in the Play Store under Settings › General › Automatically archive apps. And for downloaded films and music, the page gives steps for Google TV and YouTube Music, and for anything else says to "delete from the app that you used to download it." All of that is from Google's page (Free up storage on your Android device, read 23 September 2026).

Tablets

Google's storage page does not give separate tablet steps; it is written for "your Android device", and in its photo section speaks of "your phone or tablet". So the route above is the one to follow on a tablet too.
