# How do I sort photos in the Android gallery? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**A gallery is not a folder — it is a view of every image folder on the phone at once.** That is the whole reason it feels disordered: pictures you took, pictures a group chat downloaded, memes, receipts and screen captures all arrive in the same grid because they are all images, wherever they came from.

## Sorting inside the gallery: albums and order <p>Inside Google Photos, the main grid is chronological and not rearrangable — the ordering comes from each photo's date. Albums are where manual order lives. Google's help page *Edit an album* (read 22 September 2026) gives the steps: "Open the album, tap Edit album at the bottom, then tap Sort by at the top right", with the options "Newest", "Oldest" and "Recently added", and you can "manually drag items to rearrange them".</p> <p>That is worth knowing before you start moving files about: if the goal is a particular order for a particular set of pictures, an album does it without touching anything on disk. ## The photos you should leave exactly where they are <p>Camera output. Every gallery, backup service and editing app on the phone expects it in the standard camera folder, and moving it is how thumbnails vanish and backups get confused. We don't sort your camera pictures — that folder is deliberately outside what this app will touch, and it will never appear in `Sorted Files`.</p>

## The images that are actually a file job <p>The ones that arrived rather than the ones you made:</p> <ul> <li>**Chat downloads.** Auto-download saves every image a group posts into the chat app's own media folder, and the gallery shows them all. ## A structure that survives <p>Do the presentation work in albums, which are cheap and reversible, and reserve folder moves for the bulk categories you want out of the gallery entirely. Hiding an album is not the same as filing the files: the gallery stops showing them and the storage does not change.</p>
