How does the gallery work on Android?

Last reviewed: October 1, 2026 · Markdown version

A gallery app does not keep your pictures. It displays a list Android maintains of the image and video files on the phone, grouped by the folder each one sits in. Almost everything confusing about galleries — pictures turning up that you never took, pictures vanishing that you know are there — follows from that one design.

The index underneath

Android's developer guide calls that list the media store: the framework "provides an optimized index into media collections, called the media store, that lets users retrieve and update these media files" (Access media files from shared storage, read 1 October 2026). The system fills it by scanning shared storage; images are indexed from DCIM/ and Pictures/, video from those plus Movies/. A gallery — Samsung's, Google Photos, any other — asks that index what exists and draws the grid. The "albums" a gallery shows by default are, in practice, those folders: Samsung's troubleshooting guide tells you to look under "Albums, and then tap Downloads" for downloaded pictures, and that once image files "are in a supported folder, they will appear in Gallery" (Pictures will not display in the Gallery app, Samsung US, read 1 October 2026). Which folders those are is on our folder-map page.

Why pictures you didn't take show up

Because the index does not care who saved a file. A meme saved by a chat app or an image saved from a browser lands in a folder the system scans, so it sits in the grid beside the shots you took yourself. Our page on organising photos deals with separating the two.

Why pictures you know exist don't show up

Samsung's own list of causes is a good general checklist: "Files are marked as hidden in the My Files app", "App permissions for photos and videos are restricted", "A .nomedia file prevents the Gallery app from scanning the folder", and "Images are stored in a folder not recognized by the Gallery app" (Why Are My Photos Missing from Samsung Gallery?, Samsung Gulf, read 1 October 2026). The .nomedia file is Android's own mechanism, and its reference page says what it is for: "Developers should use this to avoid application graphics showing up in the Gallery" (MediaStore — Android Developers, read 1 October 2026). A Galaxy adds two display causes of its own on the Samsung US page above: similar pictures can be grouped so "not all of your images will appear", and an album can be switched off under Hide albums. How to see a .nomedia file at all is on our hidden-files page; the WhatsApp version of the problem has its own walkthrough.

Phone galleries and cloud galleries

Google Photos shows two things in one grid: what is on the phone and what is in your Google account. Its help page warns against reading too much into the first: "The Google Photos app displays all photos and videos stored directly on your device, regardless of which Google Account you're signed in to. Even though all photos and videos are displayed, it does not mean that they are backed up" (Back up photos & videos, Android, read 1 October 2026). The device side lives under Collections › On this device. Samsung's Gallery is a phone gallery first; Samsung documents backing it up through Google Drive's "Backup by Google One" (Use the Gallery app on your Galaxy phone or tablet, read 1 October 2026). Choosing between those set-ups is a separate page.

Deleting in a gallery deletes the file

A gallery is a window, but its delete button reaches through it. On a Galaxy, a deleted picture goes to the Gallery's Trash (Samsung US Gallery page above). In Google Photos, deletion travels further: the help page says items you delete "are also removed from" Android devices "with Google Photos installed and backup turned on" (Delete photos & videos, Android, read 1 October 2026). The gentle version there is Remove from an album: Google says such items "will still be in your Google Photos library" (Create & edit photo albums, Android, read 1 October 2026). If something went further than you meant, getting deleted photos back walks through each bin.
