How do I organize the Samsung Gallery?

Last reviewed: October 1, 2026 · Markdown version

Samsung's Gallery gives you five tools for order: albums, groups of albums, hiding, a private album, and stories. Each is in Samsung's own Gallery guide (Use the Gallery app on your Galaxy phone or tablet, Samsung US, read 1 October 2026), which is the source for everything below unless another page is named. Menus vary by model and software version, a caveat Samsung prints on the same page.

Albums: copy or move, and it matters

To make one: Albums tab, tap the plus sign, choose Album, name it, tap Create. Samsung lists the other kinds the plus sign offers: an "Auto album" that fills itself with "pictures of people that you select", a "Group", a "Shared album" and a "Shared family album".

Filling an album is where people go wrong. Select pictures, tap More, and you get two verbs: Copy to album, or Move to album "to cut and paste them into a different album". Our reading of that wording: a copy is a second file taking its own space, while a move takes the picture out of where it was. If the aim is tidiness rather than duplicates, move.

Groups: albums inside albums

Once there are a dozen albums, Samsung's answer is a group: plus sign, Group, name it, then open the group and tap Add albums. Trips, a child's school years, work receipts — anything with sub-albums fits.

Showing fewer albums

Three settings reduce clutter without deleting anything. In Gallery's settings, "Select essential albums" will "Show only the albums selected on the Albums tab", and "Merge albums" means "Albums with the same name will be displayed as a single album". The third is hiding: Samsung Australia's steps are Albums › View all › Menu › Hide albums, then toggle the ones to hide (How do I Hide & Unhide Albums in my Gallery?, read 1 October 2026). The same switch is the first thing to check when an album seems to have vanished.

A private album for what nobody else should see

Hiding is about tidiness; the private album is about privacy. Select pictures, More options › Move to private album › Move, and they are "hidden from the main gallery and any apps accessing your media". Opening it later — Menu › Private Album — asks for your security lock.

Stories, collections and automatic grouping

Stories are slideshows: Collections › Stories, then More options and Create story. Gallery also bundles look-alike shots on its own, which hides the extras behind a numbered thumbnail; the Ungroup option under More options on the Pictures tab turns that off. On the Galaxy S26, Samsung describes a Collections tab that scans your photo and video library and groups it automatically, with Edit Collections to choose and reorder the categories (New features in the Gallery app on Galaxy S26, read 1 October 2026).

Clearing duplicates

Menu › Clean out › Delete duplicate pictures, then Delete duplicates "to remove the duplicates and save the originals". Samsung notes the option "may not appear" if there is nothing to remove. Deleted copies go to the Gallery's Trash first.

Sort order: not documented

The one thing people most often ask — changing the order pictures or albums appear in — is not in either Samsung guide cited above, nor in Samsung's Gallery troubleshooting page (Pictures will not display in the Gallery app, read 1 October 2026). Those pages are silent on it, so we will not describe menu items from memory or from forum posts. Check More options inside an album on your own phone. For Google Photos, where album order is documented, see sorting photos in the Android gallery.
