Why are my screenshots disappearing?

Screenshots rarely vanish by accident. Something removed, hid or moved them — often a feature that treats them, reasonably, as the least precious pictures on the phone. Work down this list; the first two checks take a minute and find most of them.
1. Look in the bins
Each app keeps its own. Google Photos: items you delete "will stay in your trash for 30 days before they are permanently deleted" (Delete photos & videos, Android, read 3 October 2026). Samsung Gallery: "If you have sent an image to the Trash in the Gallery app, it will be permanently deleted after 30 days", and Samsung says to check the Trash in My Files as well (Pictures will not display in the Gallery app, read 3 October 2026). Files by Google has a third, under Menu › Trash, with the same 30 days (Move files to Trash & restore files from Trash, read 3 October 2026).
2. Deleted on another device
Google Photos deletions travel. Google's page warns that "Deleting photos and videos from the Google Photos app deletes the same items from your device", and that items deleted there are also removed from other phones and tablets "with Google Photos installed and backup turned on" (Delete photos & videos, same page). A tidy-up on a tablet or on the web can empty the Screenshots album on your phone.
3. Cleared to make room
Several features delete local copies of pictures that are already backed up, and screenshots are pictures:
- Android's Smart Storage. Google's storage page describes it as a way "To automatically clear backed-up photos and videos when your device's storage is almost full" (Free up storage on your Android device, read 3 October 2026).
- Files by Google's Smart Storage. When it is on, "photos backed up in Google Photos are deleted automatically", and the two conditions Google lists are photos "saved for 60 days" and storage "less than 25%" — though it says this is "only available for Pixels users on Android S" (Delete backed-up photos automatically, read 3 October 2026).
- Google Photos' Free up space. "This feature deletes photos from your device", and the same page names screenshots among the items its storage tool surfaces for deletion (Free up space on your device, Android, read 3 October 2026). What that button removes, and what it keeps.
In all three cases the backed-up copy is still in Google Photos; what is gone is the file on the phone, and with it the picture in a built-in gallery. Files by Google's "Old screenshots" card is different — it only suggests screenshots "created or received more than 4 weeks ago" and waits for you to choose (Delete your screenshots, read 3 October 2026) — so if that is how they went, someone tapped it.
4. Hidden, not deleted
Google Photos can archive a picture: "You can hide photos from your Photos view and move them to archive." An archived picture is still in albums, search results "and folders on your device", and comes back from Collections › Archive (Move photos to archive, Android, read 3 October 2026). That page describes archiving you do yourself; it does not say whether Photos ever archives screenshots for you, and on that point it is silent. Files by Google's Safe folder hides harder: it moves files behind a PIN (Protect your files with Safe folder, read 3 October 2026), and they stay out of sight until moved back out.
5. Moved by an app
Any app with access to your files can move screenshots elsewhere, and a gallery then shows them in a new album
or not at all. Adinand Auto File Sorter is one such app if you have told it to: on Pro, Screenshots is a folder
it can watch, and screenshots it finds there end up in Downloads › Sorted Files › Images. Each run is
in its Sort History, and an undo returns the files to the folder they came from.
What Samsung's guide does not cover
Samsung's screenshot guide explains how to view screenshots — Gallery, the Albums tab, the Screenshots folder — but names no setting that removes them by itself (How to take a screenshot on a Samsung phone or tablet, read 3 October 2026). The guide is silent there, so if screenshots vanish only on a Galaxy and nothing above explains it, the screenshot options in your phone's own Settings are the place to look next.
