How do I save downloads to my gallery on Android?
Last reviewed: October 14, 2026 · Markdown version
There is no "save to gallery" step for a download. A gallery shows image and video files it finds on the phone, so a picture you downloaded is usually reachable already, filed under its folder's name rather than in the main grid. What you can choose is how prominent it is: visible as a folder, part of your Photos timeline and backup, or moved in among your other pictures. Each is one setting or one move. Documents such as PDFs are a different case, covered at the end.
Why it is not with your photos
Android keeps downloads in their own folder. Its developer guide lists "Downloaded files, which are stored in the
Download/ directory" as a separate collection from images, which it describes as "including photographs and
screenshots, which are stored in the DCIM/ and Pictures/ directories"
(Access media files from shared storage, Android Developers, read 14 October 2026).
A gallery that leads with the pictures you took therefore tends to tuck downloads away. Chrome, for one, saves every download to
"your default download location"
(Download a file, Google Chrome Help, read 14 October 2026).
How a gallery builds its albums.
In Google Photos: device folders
Google's troubleshooting page sends you to the device side for pictures that came from other apps: "At the bottom, tap Collections On this device", then "Check your device folders". If you want those pictures in the main view as well, it says to "set your hide settings to "Show content from other apps."" And for backup it is explicit that other folders are opt-in: "If you want to find photos and videos on your Android phone from other apps or devices in your Google Photos Account, make sure you turn on your available device folders" (Find lost photos & videos, Google Photos Help, read 14 October 2026). The switch itself is Photos settings › Backup › Back up device folders; Google adds that "If "Back up all device folders" is on, photos in new device folders automatically back up" (Back up photos & videos, Google Photos Help, read 14 October 2026).
Before you turn backup on for Download, look at what is in it. Our view: a Download folder holds forms, tickets and memes as well as pictures you want, and backing all of it up spends your Google storage on the lot.
Moving the picture in with your photos
If you want a download to sit with your own pictures in any gallery, move it into Pictures. In Files by Google:
open the Images category, press and hold the picture (tap the circle on any others), then More › Move to, "Tap
Internal storage", open Pictures and tap Move here
(Move files to an existing folder in Internal storage, Files by Google Help, read 14 October 2026).
Galaxy owners have a Samsung-specific version of the same advice, quoted on
our downloaded-photos page. One thing to expect: the picture leaves
the Download folder, so it leaves the Download album too.
Changing where future downloads go
Moving each picture by hand gets old. Whether future downloads can land somewhere else depends on the app doing the downloading; our download-location page goes through it app by app.
Documents will not appear, whatever you do
A PDF, a spreadsheet or a ZIP is not an image or a video, and the image and video collections in Android's guide above are what
a gallery draws on, so moving one into Pictures does not put it in front of you. Those belong in a file manager. Where documents
end up on Android.
If Adinand Auto File Sorter is installed
Then a downloaded picture may not stay in Download long. The app moves files sitting directly in Download into one output
folder, Downloads › Sorted Files unless you have chosen another, and puts .jpg, .jpeg,
.png, .webp and .gif files in its Images sub-folder; any other picture format
goes to Others. If the gallery's Download album looks empty, that is the folder to look in, and Sort History lists
each file it moved.
