How do I free up WhatsApp storage on Android?
Last reviewed: October 21, 2026 · Markdown version
First decide which storage you mean, because WhatsApp now counts two. Its help article names "Device storage", the "Space on your phone used by WhatsApp media and files", and "Backup storage", the "Space used by your WhatsApp backup, stored with either WhatsApp cloud storage or Google storage" (How to free up storage on WhatsApp, WhatsApp Help Center, read 21 October 2026). If your phone is full, it is the first one you are after, and every route below works on it from inside WhatsApp.
See where the space has gone
Go to WhatsApp Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage; the space WhatsApp takes on the phone is shown at the top of that screen. The same view exists for one conversation: open the chat, tap its name, then Manage storage, which shows "how much space the chat's media is taking up, with files sorted from largest to smallest". WhatsApp's own advice on what to target is short: "You can free up storage by deleting items that are large or have been forwarded many times" (the WhatsApp article above). In our experience a handful of busy groups account for most of the total, so start with the chats at the top of the list.
Three ways to clear media
- Item by item. The article files these steps under Settings › Chats › Chat backup › Manage your storage › Review and delete media: pick a chat, tap and hold an item, add more or use Select all, tap the trash icon, and choose Delete any copies to remove duplicates too. The same page does not say whether that list covers media on the phone, in the backup, or both; on that it is silent.
- A whole chat's media at once. In the chat, tap More › More › Clear chat, choose Clear media files, then tick or untick "Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents, and Audio" and tap Clear media. WhatsApp notes that clearing "won’t delete the chat itself or remove you from a group".
- By type, from search. Tap the search field above your chats, choose Photos, Videos or Documents, open an item and use More › Delete. Here WhatsApp offers a tick box, "Also delete media received in this chat from the device gallery".
All three steps are from the same WhatsApp article. Before using any of them, note its warning that an item deleted this way is gone for good: "You won’t be able to redownload it from the chat it was in." Anything you want to keep, save somewhere outside WhatsApp first.
Why the number may not drop as much as you expect
Two sentences in the article explain most of the surprise. Copies count separately: "If you have multiple copies of an item, you’ll also need to delete all copies to free up space." And the backup is measured differently from the phone: "Your backup is stored more efficiently than the files on your phone. This means WhatsApp and your phone may show different numbers and the totals won't always match." The same article adds that a deleted item "stays in your backup until the next time you back up", so the backup figure catches up only after the next backup runs. Judge the result by your phone's own storage screen.
Stop it filling up again
WhatsApp downloads media for you unless told otherwise. Under Settings › Storage and data, the "Media auto-download" section has separate entries for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming, and in each you tick the media types to fetch automatically; anything else you can still fetch by hand: tap the photo or video, then Download (How to configure auto-download, WhatsApp Help Center, read 21 October 2026). Our suggestion: untick videos for mobile data first, since a video is usually the heaviest thing a group sends. Where those downloads end up on the phone is covered on our WhatsApp media page.
If the phone is still full
WhatsApp's article stops at its own walls. It warns that when free space "reaches critically low levels, WhatsApp might not work properly", and for space outside the app its only advice is to "contact your phone’s manufacturer" (the storage article above). The phone-wide routes, from cached data to moving files off the device, are on our page about freeing up space on Android.
