Can I delete WhatsApp's Sent images folder?

A file manager will let you delete it, but the route we would take is WhatsApp's own storage manager: it deletes media chat by chat, and WhatsApp explains in writing what that deletion does. The folder route works on files; it tells you nothing about what the app expects to find there afterwards.

What WhatsApp documents, and what it leaves out

WhatsApp's help says that "On Android, media files are automatically saved in your WhatsApp media folder", and the only sub-folder it names is the one for its .nomedia trick: "go to Images/WhatsApp Images/" (How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone, read 25 September 2026). Its storage article does not mention a Sent folder either (How to free up storage on WhatsApp, read 25 September 2026). So what a Sent folder holds, and whether WhatsApp relies on it later, is not something its help answers, and we are not going to fill the gap with a guess. Where WhatsApp's media folder sits.

The documented way: Manage storage

From the storage article above: tap More › Settings, then Storage and data › Manage storage. The screen lets you "sort your media files by Newest, Oldest, or Largest", so the heavy items surface first. To delete: select a chat, "Tap and hold an item to select", tap more items or Select all, tap the trash icon, and "Select Delete any copies to delete duplicates" before confirming.

WhatsApp spells out the consequences in the same article:

"Deleting an item in this way permanently deletes the item. You will not be able to redownload it from the chat it was in."
"Deleting an item only deletes the item for you. Other people in the chat will still be able to see the item."
"Deleted items might still be saved on your device. If you have multiple copies of an item, you’ll also need to delete all copies to free up space."

One gap matters for sent photos. The article's only gallery option — "Also delete media received in this chat from the device gallery" — is about received media. It does not say what happens to the original in your gallery that you picked the photo from. On the evidence available, assume that original is untouched and check it yourself.

If you delete the folder in a file manager

That usually means a trash, not an instant delete. Files by Google says "Files remain in Trash for 30 days and then are automatically deleted" (Move files to Trash & restore files from Trash, read 25 September 2026); Samsung's My Files keeps them "in the Trash for 30 days before being permanently deleted" (Manage files on your Galaxy phone or tablet, US edition, read 25 September 2026). Until that trash is emptied, the space does not come back. Emptying it.

Files by Google also has a WhatsApp-specific shortcut: Menu › Clean, then on the "Delete WhatsApp media" card tap Select files, choose, and "Move x file(s) to Trash" (Delete WhatsApp media files, read 25 September 2026). Our preference, if you go this way, is to select the files inside the folder rather than deleting the folder itself, so WhatsApp finds the structure it made.

Before either route

WhatsApp's storage article opens with a warning worth taking: "We suggest backing up your chats to your Google Account before deleting any content from your phone." It also warns that its own storage figure and your phone's may disagree, "because of the difference in the way WhatsApp calculates storage versus your phone’s OS" — so judge the result by the phone's storage screen, not WhatsApp's.
