Why is my phone's internal storage not showing?

When a computer shows your phone's name but no Internal storage folder, the phone has usually not let it in yet: it is locked, the access prompt was never answered, or the cable is set to charging. Samsung's troubleshooting page names exactly that symptom and those causes.

On a computer: the three usual causes

Samsung describes the symptom — "you might see the device name but not the internal storage folder" — and the first reason for it: "the phone is locked with a password, PIN, pattern or fingerprint, which prevents the PC from accessing the data." The second is a prompt on the phone: "Without tapping Allow, the PC cannot display the phone folders." The third is the USB mode: "In some modes, such as charging only, the PC may display only the device name or no folder at all" (What to do if your Samsung Galaxy phone folder does not appear on PC connection, Samsung Australia, read 25 September 2026).

So, in order: unlock the phone; tap Allow if asked; then pull down the notifications, tap the USB notification and under Use USB for choose Transferring files / Android Auto (Samsung's label) or File Transfer (Google's). Google's version of the sequence starts the same way, "Unlock your device", and names the notification to tap: "Charging this device via USB" (Transfer files between your computer & Android device, read 25 September 2026).

If the prompt never appears

Samsung's next step is on the computer: "download and install the latest USB driver for your device on the PC, then try again", and if that fails, "check whether the driver is installed correctly on the PC" (Samsung page above). Google's troubleshooting list adds the hardware checks, starting with the cable: "Try a different USB cable. Not all USB cables can transfer files." It also suggests plugging the phone into a different computer, and a different device into yours, to find which port is at fault (Google page above).

On the phone: an SD card that became internal storage

If the thing missing is your SD card rather than the phone, Google has a specific explanation: "If the SD card is recognized in Settings but not in Files by Google, that SD card might be formatted as internal storage." Such a card stops being a separate volume — "The SD card replaces internal storage. A 32 GB SD card replaces 32 GB internal storage" — and Google's advice is "We recommend that you format your SD card as portable storage", with the warning that formatting permanently deletes its data (Troubleshoot: SD card undetected issue, read 25 September 2026). Whether to use that mode at all.

On the phone: looking in the wrong view

A file manager's front page is usually categories, and Internal storage sits further down. In Files by Google you "Scroll to "Storage devices."" and then "Tap Internal storage" (Move files to an existing folder in Internal storage, read 25 September 2026). Why the category lists leave things out.
