How do I access my Samsung files on my computer?

A cable is still the most reliable way, and the step people miss is that the phone has to be told the cable is for files rather than for power.

The cable method, as Android documents it

From Android's own help page on transferring files (read 22 September 2026): "Unlock your device", then "With a USB cable, connect your device to your computer", then "On your device, tap the 'Charging this device via USB' notification", then "Under 'Use USB for,' select File Transfer". After that "A file transfer window will open on your computer. Use it to drag files", and when you are finished, "eject your device from Windows" before unplugging.

That notification is the whole trick. A phone connected without it charges and shows nothing — which is why "my computer cannot see my phone" is almost never a driver problem.

What you will see, and what you will not

You get the phone's shared storage: the downloads folder, pictures, screen captures, documents, chat-app media folders. You will not see another app's private storage, and you will not see anything that lives only in a cloud account rather than on the device. If a file appears in your phone's file app but not over the cable, that is usually the reason.

The wireless alternatives

Android's page also lists the routes that need no cable — uploading to Google Drive, backing up photos with Google Photos, and Quick Share for Windows. Those are better for a handful of files and worse for a folder of several thousand, where a cable is simply faster and does not depend on anything being uploaded first.

Before you copy: get the phone side tidy

This is the part that makes the difference. Copying a downloads folder with six years of mixed documents, installers, images and archives in it produces the same mess on the computer, and sorting it there is no easier. Sorting on the phone first means the copy lands as folders you can act on.

The other half is the Samsung-specific answer to "where do I even look": the phone's own My Files app browses the same storage the computer will show you, so it is worth using it to find the folder you want before you plug anything in.
