Where is the Music folder on Android?
Last reviewed: October 7, 2026 · Markdown version
There is a real folder called Music at the top level of your phone's internal storage —
Android names it as one of its standard folders. But the songs you hear are not necessarily in it. Music
apps read Android's audio index, which spans several folders; streaming apps keep their downloads to themselves;
and a track you saved from a browser sits in Download. Here is where to look in each case.
The folder Android names
Android's developer reference defines it as the "Standard directory in which to place any audio files that should be in the regular list of music for the user" (Environment, Android Developers, read 7 October 2026). In a file manager, open Internal storage and you will usually find it among the first-level folders. The full list of those folders is on its own page.
What a music player shows comes from a wider net. Android's media guide says the system adds audio to its index from "the Alarms/ , Audiobooks/ , Music/ , Notifications/ , Podcasts/ , and Ringtones/ directories", recognises playlists "in the Music/ or Movies/ directories", and lists voice recordings in Recordings/ separately. Downloads are a different collection: "Downloaded files, which are stored in the Download/ directory" (Access media files from shared storage, Android Developers, read 7 October 2026). That guide's audio list does not include Download/, and it does not say whether a given music app also shows audio from there; that is up to the app.
Seeing all audio at once in a file manager
Both big file managers offer an Audio view that gathers files from wherever they are, which is often faster than hunting for the folder. In Files by Google, "Under the Categories section, you can tap a category to see files from that category in a list" (View your files, Files by Google Help, read 7 October 2026), and Google's own ringtone steps send you to the Audio category, found by scrolling "Under “Categories,”" (Set an audio file as your ringtone, Files by Google Help, read 7 October 2026). Samsung's My Files "sorts your files into categories, such as Images, Videos, Audio and Downloads" (How to use Samsung My Files App, Samsung UK, read 7 October 2026).
Putting your own songs there
Samsung's guide to copying tracks from a Windows PC is the clearest vendor description of using the folder on purpose: connect by USB, choose file transfer, then "Click on the Music folder" and "Drag and drop or copy and paste any audio files you want to listen to on your device into the music folder" (How to download & add music files to your phone from Windows PC, Samsung UK, read 7 October 2026; page "Updated : 3rd November, 2022"). Copying from a computer is covered in more detail on this page.
Streaming downloads are not in Music
Songs downloaded inside a streaming app live with that app. YouTube Music's help describes downloading for Premium members and adds, "You'll need to reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain your downloads"; it does not name a folder for them, on that it is silent (Download music & podcasts to listen offline, YouTube Music Help, Android, read 7 October 2026). The reverse works, though: YouTube Music can play files from your own folders once you toggle "Show device files" in Settings › Library & downloads, with limits — "Device files can’t be added into playlists that contain streaming songs from YouTube Music. They also can’t be cast to another device" (Use YouTube Music on other apps & devices, YouTube Music Help, Android, read 7 October 2026).
Adinand Auto File Sorter and audio files
It treats .mp3, .wav, .aac and .m4a as Audio. When one of
those is sitting directly in a watched folder — Download, unless you add others — it is moved to an
Audio folder under Downloads › Sorted Files, or under the folder you chose on Android 11
and newer. Unless you pick Music as that folder, nothing it sorts ends up there, and it does not recognise other audio extensions:
a .flac or .ogg file goes to Others. If you want your library in Music, move
the files there yourself.
