What is the WhatsApp Private folder on Android?
Last reviewed: October 10, 2026 · Markdown version
WhatsApp does not say. We read its three Android help articles about where media is saved and how to keep it out of the gallery, and none of them mentions a folder named Private — not the article on finding media files (Finding media files, WhatsApp Help Center, read 10 October 2026), and not the two linked in the next section. People do find one — searches for "WhatsApp Images Private" and "WhatsApp Video Private" are common enough to show up in our own question data — so here is what WhatsApp does document, and a way to look inside the folder without guessing.
What WhatsApp documents about its folders
Its "Finding media files" article gives the top level: "On Android, media files are automatically saved in your
WhatsApp/Media folder", in internal storage, or on the SD card if there is no internal storage. It names one sub-folder
and says it is hidden on purpose: "The folder for voice messages is hidden. You can still access this folder with a file
explorer under /WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes"
(Finding media files, WhatsApp Help Center, read 10 October 2026).
That article, the one on stopping media from saving
(How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone, WhatsApp Help Center, read 10 October 2026)
and the one on auto-download
(How to configure auto-download, WhatsApp Help Center, read 10 October 2026)
are all silent on a Private folder, on what goes into it, and on whether it is safe to delete.
If your file manager shows the WhatsApp folder somewhere else, such as inside Android/media,
our page on WhatsApp's storage covers that folder and why some
apps cannot open it.
The two switches WhatsApp does describe
Both are about keeping media out of the gallery, which is the job people most often guess a Private folder does.
Media visibility can be switched off for every chat, or per chat: "Tap Media visibility > No >
OK", and the global switch "won’t affect any previous auto-download choices you’ve made for specific chats or groups".
The second is a .nomedia file, which WhatsApp tells you to create in Images/WhatsApp Images/ and
warns "will hide all your WhatsApp photos from your phone's gallery" (stop-saving article above). Whether either of these
creates a folder called Private, WhatsApp's pages do not say, and we will not guess.
Check the folder yourself
- Open a file manager and turn on hidden files — the switch, by app.
- Go into the WhatsApp media folder, then the Images or Video sub-folder, and open the folder named Private.
- Look for a file called
.nomedia. Android defines that name as the file "signaling the media scanner to ignore media in the containing directory and its subdirectories" (MediaStore, Android Developers, read 10 October 2026). If it is there, that alone explains why the pictures inside never reach your gallery. - Open a few of the pictures and see which chats they came from. That tells you more about the folder than any name.
If you want the space back
Delete from inside WhatsApp rather than from the folder, so WhatsApp knows the media is gone; its Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage screen sorts what a chat holds from largest to smallest (How to free up storage on WhatsApp, WhatsApp Help Center, read 10 October 2026). The same advice for the Sent folder, with what each route deletes.
What Adinand Auto File Sorter does with these folders
On Pro it can watch WhatsApp Documents — the preset is offered only if that folder exists on your phone — and it only
sorts files sitting directly in a folder it watches, never anything inside a sub-folder. So a Private folder under Images
or Video is left alone. On Pro you can also add any folder by hand, but think before adding this one: the app moves what it finds
into one central folder, Downloads › Sorted Files by default, so those pictures would no longer be next to
WhatsApp.
