Why don't Telegram photos show up in my Android gallery?

Last reviewed: October 21, 2026 · Markdown version

Most often, because Telegram was never asked to put them there. Seeing a photo in a chat does not mean the phone's gallery holds a copy. Telegram describes its media as living in its cloud, with the phone keeping only what it needs, and it copies pictures into the gallery only under rules you set. The checks below go from the likeliest cause to the rarest.

Auto-save is a choice, made per kind of chat

Telegram's announcement of the feature reads: "You can control when media is saved automatically to your gallery based on its size, type and which chat it was received from." The same post says the menu "now also supports exceptions", and sets out the philosophy behind it: "Media and documents can be removed from your phone's storage and re-downloaded from your Telegram cloud at any time" (Profile Photo Maker, Translating Entire Chats, Emoji Categories and More, Telegram blog, read 21 October 2026; the post is dated February 2023).

Read as a checklist, that sentence gives three reasons a picture can be skipped: the chat is of a kind you have not switched on, the file is over the size you allowed, or it is a type you left out. An exception for one chat can override the rest. The post does not give the menu path, and Telegram's FAQ does not mention saving to the gallery at all; it is silent on the setting (Telegram FAQ, read 21 October 2026). The storage controls the FAQ does name sit under Settings › Data and Storage, so that is where we would start looking on your phone.

Why the copy Telegram keeps is out of the gallery's sight

Android gives every app a private cache on shared storage, and its reference is explicit about what that means: such files "are internal to the application, and not typically visible to the user as media", and they "will be deleted when the application is uninstalled" (Context.getExternalCacheDir(), Android Developers, read 21 October 2026). An entry on Telegram's own bug tracker, filed in November 2021, says that downloaded files "are now stored in storage/Android/data/org.telegram.messenger/cache" (Downloaded files (cache folder) are not visible from File Manager apps, Telegram Bugs and Suggestions, read 21 October 2026). That is a dated user report, not current documentation. Put the two together and our reading is simple: a photo that exists only in Telegram's cache is not one a gallery is expected to show, however long you wait.

A photo that was there and has gone

If a picture used to show and no longer does, think about the cache first. Telegram's FAQ invites you to "clear your cache to free up space" and gives the route as Settings › Data and Storage › Storage Usage › Clear cache (the FAQ above). The same sentence says you can "keep all your media in the cloud without deleting things", so a cleared photo is still in the chat and can be opened again from there. Telegram can also tidy old media away by itself; how that works is on our page about where Telegram keeps files.

What to check, in order

  1. Open the chat the photo came from. If it loads there, Telegram still has it; the question is only whether a copy reached the gallery.
  2. Look at Telegram's auto-save choices for that kind of chat, the size limit, and any exception set for that one chat.
  3. For a photo you want now, open it in the chat and look in its menu for a save option, rather than waiting for auto-save to change.
  4. If a saved copy still does not appear, the gallery may be hiding a folder on purpose. How a gallery decides what to show covers that, including the .nomedia file, and showing hidden files is how you look for one.

WhatsApp has a similar set of switches with different names; if your missing pictures came from there instead, the causes are listed on the WhatsApp version of this page.
