How do I find the largest files on Android?

Last reviewed: October 7, 2026 · Markdown version

Three tools on a typical Android phone will show you big files, and each one answers a slightly different question. Files by Google has a ready-made list of large files and a Size sort; Samsung's My Files has an Analyse storage screen; Android's Settings show which category is eating the space. None of the vendor pages we read says what size makes a file "large" — that threshold is the app's own choice.

Files by Google: the card, then the sort

The quickest list is on the Clean screen. Google's steps: "Tap Menu Clean", then on the Delete large files card "tap Select files", choose, and confirm "Move x file(s) to Trash" (Delete large files, Files by Google Help, read 7 October 2026). Google's page does not define how big a file must be to appear on that card; it is silent on the cut-off. Note the last step: what you pick goes to Trash, so space comes back only when Trash is emptied — how that works.

For a ranking inside one kind of file, open a category and re-order it: "To sort your files, on the top right, tap More. Select Sort by Select an option to sort your files by File name, Date, or Size" (View your files, Files by Google Help, read 7 October 2026). Videos sorted by Size is usually the most rewarding single view. The app's search can narrow by type too, but Google lists its filters as "file type and/or date" — size is not one of them (Search for a file, Files by Google Help, read 7 October 2026).

Samsung My Files: Analyse storage

Samsung UK describes it as a storage report. You "Scroll to the bottom, then tap" Analyse storage, or "tap the More options icon" and choose it there. After the breakdown, "If you scroll down, My Files will also display any duplicate, large or unused files so you can decide whether to keep" (How to use Samsung My Files App, Samsung UK, read 7 October 2026; page "Updated : 3rd April, 2024"). Samsung Canada's newer guide, dated 15 August 2026, spells the same screen Analyze storage and documents its Duplicate files list, but gives no steps for the large-files list and no size threshold (Manage and organize files saved on your Samsung Galaxy device, Samsung Canada, read 7 October 2026).

Settings › Storage: which kind of data, not which file

Android's own help starts here: open Settings, "Tap Storage", and "Select a category". Under Free up space, you can "Scroll to the category you want", "Tap Select files", or "If the category isn’t listed, tap Browse". Google flags that "Some of these steps only work on Android 14 and up" (Free up storage on your Android device, Android Help, read 7 October 2026). This view is the one that catches what a file manager misses, because it counts apps and their data as well as loose files.

The biggest items are often not files you can see

The same Android Help page lists downloaded films and music inside apps as a separate case and closes it with: "To delete content from other sources, delete from the app that you used to download it." Its YouTube Music steps, for instance, run through Settings › Downloads & storage › Clear downloads (Android Help page above). If Settings says Videos or Apps holds tens of gigabytes and no file manager shows anything that size, that is usually the reason — offline downloads stay inside the app that made them.

Before you delete the top of the list

Our advice: open each large file before removing it. Size is no measure of value — a single long video of a family event is exactly the kind of file that tops a size ranking and that you would least want gone. Move what you are keeping to a computer or a card first, then delete. For freeing space more broadly, this page covers the other levers.
