Where do I find downloads on my tablet?

Last reviewed: October 3, 2026 · Markdown version

On an Android tablet, downloads are where they are on an Android phone: in the Files app, and in the Downloads list of the browser that fetched them. Google writes its Chrome and Gmail steps for "your Android phone or tablet" alike. What a tablet adds is two catches a phone rarely has — another person's profile, and, on Galaxy tablets, no Trash in My Files.

From the browser

Chrome's help starts "On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app", then: at the top right, tap More › Downloads — or, if the address bar sits at the bottom, "swipe up on the address bar" and tap Downloads. Files land in "your default download location", and for everything at once Google says to "open the Files app" (Download a file, Android, read 3 October 2026). The Chrome list is the fastest route to something you fetched in the last few minutes; the Files app is the route for anything older. The folder behind the default.

In Files by Google

Google's app "works on Android version 8.0 and up" (How to use Files by Google, read 3 October 2026). Its Recents section shows "your recently added, downloaded, and modified files", and any list can be re-ordered under More › Sort by by "File name, Date, or Size" (View your files, read 3 October 2026). On a big screen, Date is usually the useful one: you remember roughly when, rarely the name.

On a Galaxy Tab: My Files

Samsung's guide covers phones and tablets together. Open My Files — "It's usually in the Samsung folder" — and choose a category: Samsung lists "Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, Downloads, or Installation files" (Manage files on your Galaxy phone or tablet, read 3 October 2026). Downloads is the one you want.

Before you tidy that list, read the line Samsung prints for tablets only: "Tablets do not have the Trash feature in My Files, so files can't be restored once they are deleted." On a Galaxy phone a deleted download waits 30 days; on a Galaxy tablet it is gone at once.

A family tablet: whose downloads?

Tablets are shared more than phones, and Android keeps each person apart. Google's help on multiple users says "each profile has its own storage space. Files, messages, and apps aren't shared between users, the guest profile, or the device's owner" (Delete, switch, or add users, Android Help, read 3 October 2026). A file downloaded while a child's or guest profile was active is in that profile's storage and will not appear in yours. The same page shows where to see that it exists: Settings › Storage, under "Other users".

Email attachments

Gmail's Android help, also written for "your Android phone or tablet", saves an attachment with one Download tap (Open & download attachments in Gmail, Android, read 3 October 2026) but does not say which folder it goes to — the page is silent on that — so look for it in Files by Google's Recents rather than browsing folder by folder.
