What is the private folder in WhatsApp?

WhatsApp has no feature called a private folder, but it does have a folder of locked chats — and that is the most likely thing you have heard about. Several other features get called a private folder too, they behave very differently, and picking the wrong one is how people think something is hidden when it is not.

1. Locked chats — the folder that does exist

WhatsApp's Chat lock puts chosen conversations out of the main list: "Locked chats are hidden in a folder behind an extra layer of authentication, such as your phone passcode, Face ID, fingerprint, or a secret code." You lock one by tapping and holding the chat, then More options > Lock chat, and you can hide the folder itself so it "only appears when you enter your secret code" (Turn chat lock on or off, read 23 September 2026).

What it does to pictures is spelled out in a single line: "You can save media from locked chats on Android, but you can’t turn on Media Visibility for locked chats." The help page does not say anything about encrypting media that is already saved on the phone.

2. Hiding media from the gallery — the .nomedia file

This is WhatsApp's own documented trick. A file named .nomedia in the WhatsApp images folder "will hide all your WhatsApp photos from your phone's gallery". Their instructions: go to Images/WhatsApp Images/ and "Create a file named .nomedia, including the period"; to undo it, "simply delete the .nomedia file" (How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone, read 23 September 2026).

Understand what this does. Android defines .nomedia as a file "signaling the media scanner to ignore media in the containing directory and its subdirectories" (MediaStore — Android Developers, read 23 September 2026). The pictures stay exactly where they were, visible to any file manager. It is tidiness, not privacy.

3. Stopping media being saved at all — Media visibility

"WhatsApp automatically saves audio, video and photos sent to your phone. The Media visibility option is turned on by default." Turning it off in Settings > Chats is how WhatsApp says to "stop WhatsApp from automatically saving media to your device's local storage", and per conversation it is "Tap Media visibility > No > OK" from the chat's info screen (same WhatsApp article). The article does not say what happens to media saved before you switched it off. The four reasons pictures vanish.

4. The phone's own secure area — not a WhatsApp feature

On Samsung phones, Secure Folder is a separate locked space: "With Secure Folder, you can hide your personal data using a special passcode." Adding an app puts a copy of it inside — "You'll see a copy of the app in your Secure Folder" — and Samsung offers an optional extra: "you can turn on enhanced encryption in Secure Folder" (Use the Secure Folder on your Galaxy phone or tablet, read 23 September 2026). It belongs to the phone, not to WhatsApp.

The trade-offs are on the same Samsung page: files inside are reached through "My Files in the Secure Folder", not the ordinary one, and "Backing up your data is no longer supported for Secure Folder, but you can still restore data from previous backups." Moving something in there is a decision to handle it separately from everything else.

What is actually private in WhatsApp

Message content between you and the other person. WhatsApp's wording: "No one outside of the chat, not even WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share them," because "the encryption and decryption of messages sent and received on WhatsApp occurs entirely on your device" (About end-to-end encryption, read 23 September 2026). Decryption happens on the phone, so a received photograph that is saved to storage is, from then on, a file on your phone like any other. Archiving is not a privacy feature either: WhatsApp describes it as a way to "hide an individual or group chat from your Chats tab", and notes that "Archiving a chat doesn’t delete the chat or back it up to your SD card" (How to archive or unarchive a chat or group, read 23 September 2026).

Where the files really are

"On Android, media files are automatically saved in your WhatsApp media folder. If you have internal storage, the WhatsApp folder is located in your internal storage." (That is from the same article as the .nomedia steps.) WhatsApp's help names two of the sub-folders — Images/WhatsApp Images/ in the .nomedia instructions, and a voice-message folder it says "is hidden" but reachable with a file explorer (Finding media files, read 23 September 2026). That is the honest answer to "where is the private folder" for your media: there is a media folder, and it is not private.

The short version

If it is conversations you want out of sight, that is Chat lock, and its locked-chats folder can be hidden behind a secret code. If you want chat pictures kept off the phone in the first place, use Media visibility — globally or per chat. For something protected on a Samsung phone, Secure Folder is the phone's own feature, not WhatsApp's. The .nomedia trick hides files from the gallery and from nothing else.
