Can Files by Google automatically sort files into folders?

Last reviewed: October 3, 2026 · Markdown version

Not by anything Google documents. We read Google's help articles for Files by Google and its Play listing today: they describe browsing by category, cleaning suggestions, a PIN-locked Safe folder, backup, and moving files yourself. None of them describes a rule or a schedule that takes new files and files them into folders. What the app does automatically is delete and notify, and it does both only in narrow, stated cases.

What Google says the app is for

Google's overview is one sentence: "Use Files by Google to free up space on your device and browse and share your files." Its topics are cleaning, checking and renaming, and moving or copying "files to different folders on your device or to an SD card" (How to use Files by Google, read 3 October 2026). The Play listing's headline features run the same way — cleaning recommendations, search and browsing, Quick Share, backup, and a lock for sensitive files; the only sorting it mentions is "Sort files by size to understand what's taking up space" (Files by Google, Google Play listing, read 3 October 2026). On automatic filing into folders, both the help overview and the listing are silent.

Categories are lists, not folders

The Categories section can look like sorting. Google describes it as a view: "tap a category to see files from that category in a list", with More › Sort by to order that list by "File name, Date, or Size" (View your files, read 3 October 2026). The page does not say a category moves anything, and our reading is that it does not: an image shows under Images while it stays in whatever folder it was saved to, which is why the Download folder can be full while the categories look tidy.

What it does do on its own

  • Deletes backed-up photos, if you switch on its Smart Storage — and Google says that is "only available for Pixels users on Android S" (Delete backed-up photos automatically, read 3 October 2026).
  • Notifies you when storage is almost full, when apps have gone unused for more than 30 days, and about large files, duplicates, junk files and memes (Get notifications to free up space, read 3 October 2026).
  • Suggests clean-ups on cards such as "Delete downloaded files", where you still tap Select files and choose (Delete downloaded files, read 3 October 2026).

Moving is something you do

Every move in Google's help is a manual sequence: press and hold, tap the circle on each extra file, More › Move to, choose the folder (Move files to an existing folder in Internal storage, read 3 October 2026). The Safe folder works the same way in both directions — you move files in, and when you move them out Google says "The file will be moved back to its original location" (Protect your files with Safe folder, read 3 October 2026). For a handful of files that is fine. For a Downloads folder that grows every day, it is a chore that never ends.

Where Adinand Auto File Sorter is the answer

This gap is the one the app exists for. It looks at the files sitting directly in the folders it watches — Downloads unless you add others on Pro — reads each file's extension, and moves the file into Downloads › Sorted Files, under Documents, Images, Videos, Audio, Apps, Archives or Others. You can run that with Sort Now for free, as often as you like, with a preview of what will move. Pro adds the parts that make it automatic: a background schedule, extra watched folders, and custom rules that send files matching an extension list or a "Name contains" word to a folder you name inside Sorted Files.

Its limits are the honest half of the answer. It decides by extension only; it will not sort by date. It does not go into sub-folders. Everything lands in one central Sorted Files folder rather than staying near the app that made it. And its background runs can be delayed or stopped by Android or by the phone's maker — the settings that help with that are on this page. Files by Google remains the better tool for clearing space; the two do different jobs, and nothing stops you using both.
