Does Android have cloud storage?

Yes — it comes with the Google Account the phone signs into, and it is three services rather than one. Android's own backup covers settings, messages and app data; Google Photos covers pictures and videos; Google Drive covers the files you choose to upload. All three draw on the same allowance: "Each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage, which is shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos" (How your Google storage works, read 27 September 2026).

What Android backs up by itself

Google's list of what the phone's own backup includes is short: "Apps and app data", "Call history", "Contacts", "Device settings" and "SMS and MMS messages". Some other things are added only through particular Google apps — among them "Pictures and videos when you use Google Photos" (Back up or restore data on your Android device, read 27 September 2026).

Documents and downloads are not on that list. For files, the same page points you to a separate article on backing up files and folders to Google Drive, and adds that "Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data". Our reading: a phone with backup switched on can still lose the PDFs in its Downloads folder if nobody put them anywhere else.

Photos and videos: Google Photos backup

"You can automatically save your photos and videos to your Google Account when you turn on backup." Google's page sets out the limits: photos "up to 200 MB or 200 MP", videos "up to 10 GB", and "You can back up photos and videos to only one Google Account at a time" (Back up photos & videos, Android, read 27 September 2026).

Everything else: Google Drive, by hand

In the Drive app, "Tap New Upload", pick the files, and "Find uploaded files in My Drive until you move them". Each upload counts: "When you upload a file to Google Drive, it will take up space in your Drive" (Upload files & folders to Google Drive, Android, read 27 September 2026). Unlike photo backup, nothing on that page describes Drive picking up new files from the phone automatically; it is something you do when you decide to.

Samsung Cloud: narrower than it was

Galaxy phones also have Samsung Cloud, and Samsung's US page is precise about its current scope. Sync: "Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, Samsung Notes, Bluetooth settings, and Wi-Fi settings are the only things that can be synced to Samsung Cloud." Device backups: "Call logs, Messages, Contacts, Calendar, Clock, Settings, Home screen, and Apps data are backed up to Samsung Cloud." Pictures are excluded: "Your photos and videos cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud". It also warns that data "will be deleted if it has not been used for more than 12 months" (Access your device backups in Samsung Cloud, read 27 September 2026).

That page sends Gallery users to Microsoft OneDrive, but Samsung's OneDrive page now says "This feature is ending on September 30, 2026", adding that photos already synced "will remain in OneDrive and can be viewed through the OneDrive app" (Sync your Gallery photos with OneDrive, read 27 September 2026). Samsung's Gulf-region notice describes the same retreat for file storage: "Samsung Cloud is discontinuing Gallery Sync and Drive features and replacing them with Microsoft OneDrive", with dates that vary by region (How have Samsung Cloud and Gallery Sync changed?, Samsung Gulf, read 27 September 2026). On a Galaxy phone, then, Google Photos or another service has to hold the pictures.

Cloud space is not phone space

The two numbers are separate. Backing a photo up puts a copy in the account; the phone keeps its own until you remove it — Google's storage help lists deleting "the copies on your phone or tablet" as a separate step, after backing up with Google Photos (Free up storage on your Android device, read 27 September 2026).
