Does a SIM card hold storage?

Not for your files. Photos, videos, downloads and apps are never stored on a SIM card; what a SIM can hold is a limited number of contacts, and Samsung says outright that it was not built for storage. If your phone takes a second card for files, that is a microSD card, and it is a different thing.

What a SIM can hold

Contacts, and not many. Samsung's contacts page puts it plainly: "SIM cards are not designed for storage and can only hold a certain amount of contacts" (How to manage, save or copy contacts on your phone & sim, Samsung UK, read 25 September 2026). It does not give the number, and we have not found a Samsung page that does. Contacts kept only on the SIM also lose a feature: "You cannot set a custom ringtone for contacts that are stored only on the SIM card" (Manage your contacts with ease on your Galaxy phone and tablet, US edition, read 25 September 2026).

An eSIM is different again. Samsung lists the places contacts can live as "USIMs, a user's Samsung/Google account, and eSIMs, which utilize the device's storage", and adds that "For devices running One UI 6.1 or later, the eSIM Contact saving function is no longer supported" (eSIM Contact saving function support discontinued, Samsung Caribbean, read 25 September 2026).

Where your files actually are

Android's storage overview counts two physical places: "Android provides two types of physical storage locations: internal storage and external storage", and "Removable volumes, such as an SD card, appear in the file system as part of external storage" (Data and file storage overview, read 25 September 2026). A SIM card is not among them. Samsung's own file guide says the same in everyday terms: the phone "has a massive internal storage", and if it fills up you can move files "to an external storage system, such as a microSD card" (Manage files on your Galaxy phone or tablet, US edition, read 25 September 2026).

The practical upshot: moving your SIM to a new phone may carry a few contacts across. It does not carry a single photo. What internal storage covers · putting files on a microSD card.

Getting contacts off the SIM

If you have been relying on the SIM for contacts, copy them somewhere sturdier. Google's steps: "Insert the SIM card into your device", open the Contacts app, tap Organize › Manage SIM, pick the contacts and the account, and tap Import. The SIM keeps its copy: "After you import, the contacts are still in your other account" (Import your contacts into Google Contacts, read 25 September 2026).

Google can also do this continuously, through a switch named "Backup device-only & SIM contacts automatically", with the caveat that it "depends on your device’s make and model" (Back up & sync device & SIM contacts, read 25 September 2026). On a Galaxy phone, Samsung's route is Contacts › Manage contacts › Import or export contacts, and for a phone swap it points you elsewhere: "the Smart Switch app makes the process quick and easy" (Samsung UK contacts page above).
