# Why do WhatsApp downloads fail? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**WhatsApp's Android help puts one cause well ahead of the rest: "If you can’t download, open, or send media files, the most common reason why is a weak internet connection."** ([*Can’t download, open, or send media files*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1096027074615511/?cms_platform=android&locale=en_US), read 14 October 2026) After that come three things on the phone itself: the permission WhatsApp needs to save files, room to save them, and the state of an SD card. Work down them in that order; every step below is from that article unless a different source is named.

## 1. The connection
WhatsApp's list is: restart the phone, update WhatsApp, update the phone's software, and "Try connecting to mobile data if you're on Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi if you're on mobile data", then contact your mobile provider. Swapping networks is the quickest test of the five, because it tells you in a minute whether the problem follows the network.

## 2. Permission to save
This is the cause that looks like a bug. "WhatsApp needs permission to access your phone’s storage and media files. Without this permission, you won’t be able to download, save, or send photos, videos, and documents." The route is **Settings › Apps › WhatsApp › Permissions**: **Photos and videos** to Allow, and for documents and audio, **Music and audio** and **Files** as well. WhatsApp warns that the names differ by phone — "Files and media", "Storage", or separate entries — and, if everything already says Allow, suggests turning the permission off and on again, restarting, and clearing WhatsApp's cache under **Storage**. Clearing the cache is not the same button as Clear storage; [the difference between the two](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/free-up-space-on-android) matters here.

## 3. Room on the phone, or on the card
For the SD card the article says to check for "Enough storage space" and that "Read-only mode is turned off", and that if problems continue "your SD card might be corrupted and need to be reformatted or replaced". For the phone's own storage, WhatsApp's storage article starts from the same premise — "To ensure that WhatsApp works properly, make sure that your phone has storage space available" — and its **Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage** screen shows what each chat holds, "with files sorted from largest to smallest" ([*How to free up storage on WhatsApp*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/5503646096388294/?cms_platform=android&locale=en_US), read 14 October 2026). [What else is filling the phone.](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/why-is-my-phone-storage-full)

## 4. Whether it was meant to download at all
Sometimes nothing failed: the item was never set to download. WhatsApp's auto-download settings decide, per connection type, which of photos, voice messages, videos and documents arrive by themselves; anything unticked waits for you. For photos and videos the article's manual route is to tap the item, then **Download** ([*How to configure auto-download*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/366146522333492/?cms_platform=android&locale=en_US), read 14 October 2026). The same article adds one fixed exception: "YouTube videos are unable to auto-download."

## What the article does not cover
People also report media that will not download because it is "missing" or too old. The failed-downloads article we read today ([*Can’t download, open, or send media files*](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1096027074615511/?cms_platform=android&locale=en_US), read 14 October 2026) does not mention an expiry date for media or a message about missing files; on how long a file stays downloadable it is silent, so we will not give a number. If a download fails only for one old message while new ones arrive fine, asking the sender to send it again is the practical test.

## Files moved out of WhatsApp's folders
One more case is ours to own. Adinand Auto File Sorter, if you have it watch WhatsApp Documents on Pro, moves the documents it finds there into one central folder, `Downloads › Sorted Files` unless you choose another. WhatsApp's help pages we read, including [*Finding media files*](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1436677150190242/?cms_platform=android&locale=en_US) (read 14 October 2026), do not say whether a chat can still open a document after it has been moved out of the WhatsApp folder, so do not count on it: open the file from the sorted folder instead, and if you want one back where it was, an undo returns files to their original path (the most recent sort for free, any past sort on Pro).
