**Telegram's FAQ does not give a folder** ([*Telegram FAQ*](https://telegram.org/faq), read 7 October 2026). What Telegram describes instead is a model where your files live in Telegram's cloud and the phone keeps a cache — one that Telegram can be set to empty by itself. That explains the most common complaint, a file that was there last week and is now being downloaded again, better than any folder path would. Below is what Telegram writes, and the single path we found on a Telegram site.

## What the FAQ says, and what it leaves out
The FAQ's storage advice is about space, not location: "Telegram needs less than 100 MB on your device – you can keep all your media in the cloud without deleting things – simply clear your cache to free up space." It gives the menu as "Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage> Clear cache" ([*Telegram FAQ*](https://telegram.org/faq), read 7 October 2026). Nowhere on that page is there a folder name for downloaded documents or media on Android; on where the files sit, the FAQ is silent.

## Why a file can disappear by itself
Telegram's own blog describes the setting behind it. "Using the Keep Media setting, you can control how long unused media stays on your device. If you haven't accessed a file for the specified time, it is automatically deleted from the cache." The same post adds that "your data will instantly re-download from the cloud the moment you access it again" ([*Clearing Cache and Reordering Stickers*, Telegram blog](https://telegram.org/blog/cache-and-stickers), read 7 October 2026; post dated December 8, 2015). A later post says users "could set a maximum cache size or auto-remove unused items after a period of time", and that auto-remove can be set separately for "Private Chats, Groups, and Channels – with exceptions for specific chats", under "Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage" ([*Hidden Media, Zero Storage Usage, New Drawing Tools…*, Telegram blog](https://telegram.org/blog/hidden-media-zero-storage-profile-pics), read 7 October 2026; dated December 30, 2022).

So a PDF you opened once in a group may simply have been tidied away by Telegram. Our rule of thumb: anything from Telegram you need to keep on the phone, take out of Telegram rather than trusting the cache to hold it.

## Photos and videos: the gallery auto-save
For pictures and clips there is a separate control. Telegram announced that "You can control when media is saved automatically to your gallery based on its size, type and which chat it was received from", with exceptions ([*Profile Photo Maker, Translating Entire Chats, Emoji Categories and More*, Telegram blog](https://telegram.org/blog/profile-pics-emoji-translations), read 7 October 2026; dated February 3, 2023). Neither that post nor the December 2022 one says which folder auto-saved media goes into; both are silent on the path. If auto-save is on, look in your gallery app first, not a file manager.

## The one folder a Telegram site names
It is in an issue on Telegram's public bug tracker, filed on 6 November 2021 against Android version 8.2.7: "Due to the new Android system restrictions, downloaded files are now stored in storage/Android/data/org.telegram.messenger/cache . Its visibility will depend on file manager app's permission access (for some apps its content is shown as empty so it is not visible)" ([*Downloaded files (cache folder) are not visible from File Manager apps*, Telegram Bugs and Suggestions](https://bugs.telegram.org/c/10927/103), read 7 October 2026). Treat it as a dated report, not current documentation: it is a bug entry, it is nearly five years old, and the app has changed many times since.

The "shown as empty" part matches Android's rules. Google's developer notes for Android 11 say that "apps can no longer access files in any other app's dedicated, app-specific directory within external storage" ([*Storage updates in Android 11*, Android Developers](https://developer.android.com/about/versions/11/privacy/storage), read 7 October 2026). A file manager that shows nothing under `Android/data` is following that rule, not hiding your files on purpose. WhatsApp keeps its media somewhere different again — [its folder is covered here](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-whatsapp-media-stored).

## Adinand Auto File Sorter and Telegram
Telegram is one of the app's watched-folder presets on Pro, and like every preset it is offered only when that folder exists on your phone. When it is watched, files found sitting directly in it are moved out to the one central output folder — `Downloads › Sorted Files` by default, or the folder you chose on Android 11 and newer — and filed by extension. They do not stay beside Telegram. Which Telegram folder the preset points at depends on what exists on your phone, so check the preset list in the app rather than assuming it reaches the cache path in the bug report above.
