# Where are WhatsApp media files stored on Android? — Adinand Auto File Sorter Last reviewed: September 21, 2026. HTML version: https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-whatsapp-media-stored **WhatsApp saves what you receive to your phone, into its own media folder — which on a modern Android lives under `Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/`, with separate sub-folders for Images, Video, Audio, Documents and Voice Notes.** Nothing you did put it there; auto-download is on by default, which is why this folder is so often the largest thing on a phone nobody has audited. ## Finding it yourself, in two taps

Open the Files app, switch from the category view to the folder or "Internal storage" view, and walk down `Android` → `media` → `com.whatsapp` → `WhatsApp` → `Media`. The sub-folder names are plain English. If your file manager hides the `Android` folder, look for a "show internal storage" or "show hidden" toggle in its menu.

Two practical notes. Sent and received media are split into separate sub-folders, so a folder that looks small may have a much larger sibling. And deleting from this folder deletes the file from the phone, not from the chat — WhatsApp will show the message with the media missing, and can usually re-download it if it is recent enough.

## Why an app cannot simply open that folder for you

Because Android stopped allowing it. Under scoped storage, Android's own documentation says apps *"have access only to the app-specific directory on external storage, as well as specific types of media that the app has created."* That is a deliberate privacy boundary: one app's media directory is not another app's to browse. It is also the honest reason a file tool either asks you to grant a broad permission or cannot reach that folder at all. ## Stopping the pile before it starts

WhatsApp's own settings control auto-download separately for photos, audio, video and documents, and separately again for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. Turning off video auto-download alone removes most of the growth for most people — media you actually want is still one tap away in the chat.
