# Where are photos stored on Android? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**Photos you take with the camera are saved in one standard folder at the top of the phone's storage — the one Android's developer reference lists as `DIRECTORY_DCIM`, a folder named `DCIM` — and on Samsung phones in the `Camera` folder inside it. Pictures from everywhere else are spread across other folders, and the gallery app pulls them all into one view.** That is why "where is it?" and "where does the gallery show it?" can have different answers.

## What Android's own documentation says
The developer reference names `DCIM` "The traditional location for pictures and videos when mounting the device as a camera", and calls it "primarily a convention for the top-level public directory". Of the `Pictures` folder it says something that explains a lot of confusion: it is the "Standard directory in which to place pictures that are available to the user", but "the media scanner will find and collect pictures in any directory" ([*Environment*, Android Developers](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/Environment), read 8 October 2026). The storage guide lists the index Android keeps — "Images, including photographs and screenshots, which are stored in the DCIM/ and Pictures/ directories" — and puts downloads in a separate place, "the Download/ directory" ([*Access media files from shared storage*, Android Developers](https://developer.android.com/training/data-storage/shared/media), read 8 October 2026). Neither page names a `Camera` sub-folder; that comes from the phone maker.

## On a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung names the sub-folder inside Android's `DIRECTORY_DCIM`: "If you are looking for images from your camera, you can find these under My Files > Internal storage or SD card > DCIM > Camera" ([*How to use Samsung My Files App*, Samsung UK](https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/how-to-use-my-files/), read 8 October 2026; page "Updated : 3rd April, 2024"). The "or SD card" is a real fork. A Galaxy with a card slot can be told to save new shots there: open the Camera app, "Tap the settings cog", "Tap Storage location", "Tap SD card" ([*How to use SD card with your Samsung phone*, Samsung UK](https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/using-an-sd-card/), read 8 October 2026; page "Updated : 14th July, 2026"). If recent photos are missing from internal storage, check that setting before anything else.

Gallery albums are a different thing from those folders. Samsung's Gallery offers **Move to album** and **Copy to album**, and a private album whose content "will be hidden from the main gallery and any apps accessing your media" ([*Use the Gallery app on your Galaxy phone or tablet*, Samsung US](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002535/), read 8 October 2026). ## In Google Photos
Photos on the phone are grouped by folder under **Collections › On this device** — Android's help uses that route for screenshots ("At the bottom, tap Collections On this device Screenshots") ([*Take a screenshot or record your screen*, Android Help](https://support.google.com/android/answer/9075928?hl=en), read 8 October 2026). Backup is folder-based too. Google warns that "When you turn “Backup” on, your chosen device folders are automatically backed up too, not only your camera", and lets you switch each one on or off under **Back up device folders** ([*Back up photos & videos*, Google Photos Help](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 8 October 2026). Seeing a picture in Google Photos therefore tells you it exists somewhere — on this phone or in your account — not which folder it is in.

## Pictures that did not come from your camera

Saved from a browser or an email: usually with your downloads — [each app's route](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-have-my-downloaded-photos-gone).

Received in a chat: [WhatsApp's folder](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-whatsapp-media-stored) is its own case.

Screenshots: [where they are saved](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-screenshots-saved-on-android).

Gone missing after a delete: [the bins, app by app](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/recover-deleted-photos-folder-android).

## What Adinand Auto File Sorter does with pictures
Pictures you take with the camera are not something it sorts out of the box: the camera's folder is deliberately never one of its ready-made watched folders. What it files are pictures sitting loose in the folders it watches — Download by default. A `.jpg`, `.jpeg`, `.png`, `.webp` or `.gif` there is moved to the `Images` folder under `Downloads › Sorted Files` (or under the folder you chose, on Android 11 and newer); any other picture format, such as `.heic`, goes to `Others`, because the app goes by file extension only. Screenshots can be added as a watched folder on Pro, and moving them takes them out of the folder your gallery groups them under, so that one is worth thinking about first.
