# Where does WhatsApp keep status photos and videos on Android? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**WhatsApp documents two places for your own statuses and none for other people's.** A status you posted can be saved to the phone, and WhatsApp says saved ones show up in your Gallery app or Google Photos; a newer status archive keeps your expired statuses inside WhatsApp. For a status someone else posted, WhatsApp's help is one line: "You can’t save someone else’s status." None of the WhatsApp pages we read today names a folder where statuses are stored.

## A status is meant to vanish
WhatsApp's definition: "WhatsApp Status allows you to share text, photo, video, and GIF updates that disappear after 24 hours." The same article caps length ("The maximum duration for status is 90 seconds") and adds that "It's not possible to turn off or disable WhatsApp Status" ([*About status*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/454876960047011/?cms_platform=android), read 20 October 2026). That 24-hour design is the background to everything below: the app is built so that what you see in Updates goes away.

## Saving a status you posted
Tap **Updates › My status**, tap the status, then **More › Save**. WhatsApp's note on where it goes: "Saved updates are stored on your device. To view your saved statuses, open your Gallery app or the Google Photos app." The same page is where the line about other people's statuses sits: "You can’t save someone else’s status" ([*How to edit, save and delete your status*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/8560797347309938/?cms_platform=android), read 20 October 2026). It names the apps to look in, not a folder on the phone.

## The status archive
WhatsApp says this "is rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet". Where it is on, it "lets you keep your own statuses and details like views, likes, and reactions after the 24-hour viewing window ends", and "Only you can see the statuses in your archive. They are stored on your phone and remain end-to-end encrypted." Open it from **Updates › More › Status archive**. Two storage points matter on a full phone: "Archived statuses count toward your WhatsApp storage, but you can delete them at any time", and they are "included in your WhatsApp backup by default". You delete them under **Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage**, and switching the archive off "doesn't delete statuses that are already in your archive" ([*About status archive*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1209149457812816/?cms_platform=android), read 20 October 2026). The archive is a list inside WhatsApp, not a folder you browse in a file manager.

## Statuses other people post
WhatsApp's guide to viewing them covers looking, liking and replying, and reminds you that "People can see if you view their status, unless you or they have disabled read receipts" ([*How to view, like, and reply to status*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/2544894022567526/?cms_platform=android), read 20 October 2026). It says nothing about where viewed statuses are kept on the phone. WhatsApp's article on finding media describes the `WhatsApp/Media` folder and its hidden voice-notes folder and does not mention statuses at all ([*Finding media files*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1436677150190242/?cms_platform=android), read 20 October 2026). Whatever a file manager turns up inside WhatsApp's folders is WhatsApp's own working layout, undocumented and free to change. Our view: someone posted it to disappear, and if you want a copy, ask them to send it to you in a chat.

## Space, when statuses will not load
WhatsApp's status pages give one figure twice: you need at least 1GB free, both to view statuses (the save-and-delete page above) and to share one ([*Can't create or share status*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/896930805262380/?cms_platform=android), read 20 October 2026). If statuses stop opening, free space before anything else; [where WhatsApp's photos and videos are stored](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-whatsapp-media-stored) is the usual place to start.
