What does "unmount SD card" mean on Android?

Last reviewed: October 29, 2026 · Markdown version

Unmounting is the phone letting go of the card. While a card is mounted, apps can be reading from it or writing to it at any moment. Unmounting stops that, so that pulling the card out cannot cut a write off halfway. It does not erase or change the files on the card.

The words, as Android uses them

Android's developer reference has a name for each state a card can be in (Environment, Android Developers, read 29 October 2026):

  • Mounted: in use. A variant, "mounted at its mount point with read-only access", is the state behind a card that can be read but not written (our read-only page).
  • Ejecting: "the media is in the process of being ejected".
  • Unmounted: "the media is present but not mounted", which is what you have after tapping Unmount and before taking the card out.
  • Bad removal: "the media was removed before it was unmounted". This is the one unmounting exists to avoid.

How to do it on a Galaxy

Samsung's guide is firm about the order: "you must unmount the microSD card before removing it". Its steps: open Settings › Device care › Storage, tap the three-dot menu, then Storage settings, then Unmount; only then use the ejector tool on the SIM and microSD tray, and "Be careful not to insert the ejector tool into any of the microphone or speaker holes" (MicroSD cards and your Galaxy phone or tablet, Samsung US, read 29 October 2026). Menu names vary between One UI versions; if yours differ, search Settings for "SD card".

Google's own SD card help covers formatting a card as portable or internal storage and does not describe unmounting or ejecting at all; on that it is silent (Get started with an SD card, Android Help, read 29 October 2026). On other phones, look for Eject or Unmount next to the card under Settings › Storage.

What changes while it is unmounted

  • Files on the card disappear from the gallery, music app and file manager until the card is mounted again. Nothing is deleted.
  • Apps that keep their own files on the card cannot reach them. Android warns developers that such files "aren't guaranteed to be accessible, such as when a removable SD card is taken out of the device" (Access app-specific files, Android Developers, read 29 October 2026).
  • A card set up as internal storage is a different case: apps and data have moved onto it, so taking it out can break them. If yours was adopted, read the internal storage page before removing it.

Getting it back

Neither page tells you how to mount it again. In our experience, taking the card out and putting it back, or restarting the phone, brings it back as mounted. If the phone instead reports a problem with the card, start with the corrupted-card checklist before formatting anything.

If Adinand Auto File Sorter watches a folder on the card

That only happens if you added a folder on the card yourself as a custom watched folder, a Pro feature; there is no SD card setting of its own. While the card is unmounted or removed, that folder is simply skipped for the run, and the app goes on sorting the rest.
