# Can you sort YouTube downloads? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**Not the way you sort files. A video you download in the YouTube app is not a file you can browse to, rename or put in a folder; YouTube's own answer is that "The videos are stored encrypted on the device and can only be watched in the YouTube app."** ([*YouTube videos offline FAQs*, YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7381437?hl=en), read 14 October 2026) What you can arrange is the list inside the app, and the way to do that is with playlists.

## Where the list is
YouTube's Premium help gives the route on Android: tap your profile picture, then "At the top of your Library, tap the Downloaded filter Downloads playlist", and it adds that the same playlist sits "in your Library under Recents" ([*Watch videos offline with YouTube Premium*, YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/11977233?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 14 October 2026). That page covers downloading, finding, deleting and download quality. It says nothing about sorting the Downloads playlist, by date, title or size; on ordering it is silent, and we found no setting for it on the pages we read today.

## Order through playlists instead
Playlists are the part of YouTube that does accept arranging. Its playlist help describes "Reorder a playlist" as "Open the playlist Drag a video up or down the playlist", and lets you filter one by type with the "All" and "Videos" chips on a phone ([*Create & manage playlists*, YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/57792?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 14 October 2026). Downloading a playlist rather than single videos also keeps the group together, and YouTube's FAQ notes a side effect: "If you’ve downloaded a whole playlist, videos may download automatically", for example when a new video joins a playlist you watched from in the last 30 days (offline FAQs page above). So our suggestion is one private playlist per purpose, such as "Flight" or "Course", downloaded whole, instead of a long flat Downloads list.

## Pruning what is there
From the Downloads playlist, tap **More** next to a video and "Select Delete from downloads"; to clear the lot, **Settings › Background & downloads › Delete downloads** (Premium help page above). Two limits from the same page decide what stays: downloads "can be played offline for up to 29 days" before the phone has to reconnect, and a video no longer available offline "will be removed from your device during the next sync". So the list can shrink by itself.

## Where they are stored
The one storage choice YouTube gives you is the SD card: **Settings › Background & downloads › Use SD card**. It does not move what you already have: "Currently, there is no option to move downloaded videos between your device’s internal storage and an SD card"; you delete and download again ([*Download YouTube videos to an SD card*, YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7381355?hl=en), read 14 October 2026). That page does not name the folder on the card. A video you saved from a web page in a browser is different: it is an ordinary file in your downloads, and [this page covers where it lands](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-downloaded-videos-stored).
