# How do I see all the files on my Android phone? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**Open your file manager and browse the storage itself rather than the category tabs — in Files by Google that is "Storage devices", then "Internal storage".** The category lists are a filtered view, and a file that does not fit the filter simply is not in them. A few things, though, are genuinely not there: another app's private folder, a Safe folder's contents, and the trash.

## Two views, and only one is the folder tree

Google's instructions for moving a file give both routes: "Under 'Categories,' select a category", or "Scroll to 'Storage devices.'" and "Tap Internal storage". Settings is the other door — "Tap Storage", then "If the category isn't listed, tap Browse" — though "Some of these steps only work on Android 14 and up". On a Galaxy phone the app is My Files, and Samsung's caveat applies to every step here: "Available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider and software version."

## What Android indexes, and from where

"The system automatically scans an external storage volume and adds media files to the following well-defined collections": images from the camera and `Pictures/` directories, videos from the camera, `Movies/` and `Pictures/`, audio from six named directories. Downloaded files are separate — "stored in the `Download/` directory", and on Android 10 and higher recorded in a downloads table of their own. The index turns on what a file is and where it sits, so a document in a folder you invented matches neither list.

## Three ways a file can be real and invisible

**It belongs to another app.** Android's storage documentation answers "Can other apps access the files?" with a flat "No" for app-specific files. And an app built for Android 11 or later can no longer ask you to pick individual files out of `Android/data/` or `Android/obb/`: those SAF changes "take effect only if your app targets Android 11 or higher".

**It is in a Safe folder.** Of that PIN-locked area: "You won't find files in the Safe folder in search results or categories" — with the warning beside it, "If you forget your PIN or Pattern, you can't access your files."

**It is in the trash.** In Files by Google, "Files remain in Trash for 30 days and then are automatically deleted" — absent from the ordinary views, and restorable until then. Google scopes the feature itself, though: "This feature is available in Android R and will be rolled out in phases for other Android versions." Android R is Android 11, so below it there may be no Trash at all and a deletion is permanent; confirm your Files app has a Trash entry before relying on it.
