**First decide whether you want an album or a real folder, because the same tap does different things in different apps.** In Google Photos an album is a list that leaves the picture where it was. In Samsung's Gallery you choose between copying and moving. In a file manager, moving changes where the file actually lives — and that is also the route for documents, which no gallery will take.

## Google Photos: an album, nothing moves
Google's steps: "Touch and hold a photo, and then select the photos you want in your new album", tap **Add to album**, optionally add a title, then **Done**. An album can hold "up to 20,000 photos or videos", and removing a picture from it does not delete it: "Photos and videos you remove from albums will still be in your Google Photos library unless you delete them from the main “Photos” section" ([*Create & edit photo albums*, Google Photos Help](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128849?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 10 October 2026). That page says nothing about folders on the phone, so do not expect a Photos album to appear in a file manager. ## Samsung Gallery: copy or move, your choice
Samsung offers both verbs. From the Pictures tab, select, tap **More**, then "Copy to album" or "Move to album" — the second, in Samsung's words, will "cut and paste them into a different album". A new album is **Albums** › the plus sign › **Album**, name it, **Create** ([*Use the Gallery app on your Galaxy phone or tablet*, Samsung US](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002535/), read 10 October 2026). Samsung's troubleshooting page shows how closely its albums follow folders: it says "The Gallery app relies on specific folder structures", and for images that "may appear in the Downloads folder but not in the main Pictures tab" it sends you to **Albums › Downloads** ([*Why Are My Photos Missing from Samsung Gallery?*, Samsung Gulf](https://www.samsung.com/ae/support/mobile-devices/pictures-in-the-my-files-app-are-missing-from-the-gallery-app/), read 10 October 2026). A copy is a second file, so it takes the space twice; a move does not. [More on Samsung's albums.](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/organize-samsung-gallery)

## A file manager: a real folder, for pictures or documents
In Files by Google, open a category, select the files, then More › **Move to**; the article is literally titled "Move files to a new folder in Internal storage", because the new folder is made during the move ([*Move files to a new folder in Internal storage*, Files by Google Help](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9809031?hl=en), read 10 October 2026). [The full steps](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/create-a-folder-on-an-android-phone) and [what to do when a move is refused](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/how-to-move-files-on-android) have their own pages.

## Which one to pick
Our rule of thumb: photos you took and want to look at belong in albums, because an album can be deleted without losing a picture. Pictures you received, saved or downloaded — receipts, tickets, memes — and every document belong in folders, because you will want them out of the gallery or on a computer one day. One catch when you make folders for pictures: if a `.nomedia` file is inside, the gallery will skip it — "A .nomedia file prevents the Gallery app from scanning the folder", in Samsung's words (troubleshooting page above).

## Where Adinand Auto File Sorter fits
It makes the folder side automatic for downloads. Pictures sitting directly in a watched folder — Download by default, others such as Screenshots or WhatsApp Documents on Pro — are moved into an `Images` folder under `Downloads › Sorted Files`, with documents going to `Documents`. It decides by extension: only `.jpg`, `.jpeg`, `.png`, `.webp` and `.gif` count as images, so a `.heic` photo lands in `Others`. The camera folder is never one of its presets, and it does not make albums.
