# How do I move files to an SD card? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**Moving files to a card takes a handful of taps, and the two things worth knowing are what it will not take and why the space comes back.**

## The steps <p>Google's sequence for Files by Google, from a category ([*Move or copy files to your SD card*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9712028), read 23 September 2026):</p> <ol> <li>Open Files by Google and, under **Categories**, pick a category.</li> <li>Find the file, then at the top right tap **More** > **Move to**.</li> <li>Tap **SD card**. To put it somewhere new, choose where the folder should go, tap **Add new folder**, and "Enter folder name in the pop-up".</li> <li>Tap **Move to folder** — or, for an existing folder, **Move here**.</li> </ol> <p>The same page describes a shortcut in the **Clean** menu: a "Move to SD Card" card where you tap **Select files**. Google also notes that "Files by Google works on Android version 8.0 and up."</p> <p>On a Samsung phone, My Files does it with "Touch and hold the file(s) or folder(s) you want to move", then **Move**, and "Move here" at the destination ([*Manage files on your Galaxy phone or tablet*](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002531/), read 23 September 2026).</p>

## Move versus copy — and what happens mid-transfer <p>Samsung's wording makes the difference plain: Move is the option that will "completely remove the file from its current location and move it to a new location". A copy leaves the original where it is, so only a move frees anything on the phone. Our advice for the moment in between: do not pull the card while a move is running, and do a large batch while the phone is charging.</p>

## What will not go onto the card <ul> <li>**Other apps' private data.** Android's developer documentation says "Other apps cannot access files stored within internal storage" ([*Access app-specific files*](https://developer.android.com/training/data-storage/app-specific), read 23 September 2026), so a file manager cannot reach it to move it. [Why that changed.](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/what-is-scoped-storage)</li> <li>**Apps, on a card used as portable storage.** Google's comparison is blunt: with a portable card, "You can’t install apps on the SD card" ([*Troubleshoot: SD card undetected issue*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/10857645), read 23 September 2026), and Samsung adds that "apps cannot be moved to the SD card using My Files".</li> <li>**Nothing at all, if the card is not showing up.** Google's explanation for a card that Settings sees but Files by Google does not: "that SD card might be formatted as internal storage". ## Move the right things <p>Start with whatever is biggest on your phone, not with whatever feels most disorganised. Google's own route to finding that out is **Settings** > **Storage**, then "Select a category" ([*Free up storage on your Android device*](https://support.google.com/android/answer/7431795), read 23 September 2026).</p> <p>And keep in mind that a card is one piece of hardware. It is more storage, not a backup.</p>

## Why the card fills up too <p>In our experience, because nothing changed upstream. Downloads keep arriving in the same folder at the same rate, and the move you just did was a one-off against a continuous inflow. ## The short version <p>Move rather than copy, start with the biggest category Settings shows you, and leave the card in place until the move finishes. Apps and other apps' private data will not go onto a portable card. And remember the card is more storage, not a backup — if it fails, what you moved onto it goes with it.</p>
