# How do I use the Files app on Android? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**Most Android phones ship with a file manager and most people never open it** — usually called Files, or My Files on Samsung. It is the fastest route to "where did that download go", and its three views answer three different questions.

## The three views, and when each one is right <ul> <li>**Categories** (Documents, Images, Video, Audio, Downloads) — built by scanning the whole device, so it finds files wherever the app that saved them put them. This is the right view when you know *what* you are looking for but not *where* it is.</li> <li>**Browse / Internal storage** — the real folder tree. Use it when you know the path, or when you want to move things rather than open them.</li> <li>**Clean / storage suggestions** — Google's Files app surfaces cards here, including one devoted to exactly the pile that fills phones: "Delete downloaded files", with a Select files button and a "Move x file(s) to Trash" action.</li> </ul>

## Three habits that make it useful <ol> <li>**Sort by date, not name.** You almost always remember roughly when, and almost never what a downloaded file was called.</li> <li>**Use search with a partial name.** It matches file names, so half a word is enough — but it does not look inside documents, which is a different job.</li> <li>**Long-press to select, then move.** Multi-select is how you do anything at volume; tapping files one at a time is how people conclude Android file management is hopeless. ## The two things it will not show you <ul> <li>**Another app's private storage.** Android's rules, not the app's choice: an app *"has access only to the app-specific directory on external storage, as well as specific types of media that the app has created."* [Why that boundary exists](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/what-is-scoped-storage).</li> <li>**What is inside your documents.** File managers search names, never contents, so "the PDF with the policy number in it" is not a question this tool can answer.</li> </ul>

## Where Adinand Auto File Sorter fits <p>A file manager is a place to look; this is a rule that runs so there is less to look through. Pointed at a watched folder — Downloads by default — it files what arrives into `Downloads › Sorted Files` by category, so the folder stops being a single undifferentiated pile. It only touches files sitting directly in a watched folder, categorises by file extension, and never deletes or overwrites anything.</p>
