# How to move files on Android — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**In Files by Google: find the file, press and hold it, tap More and then "Move to", tap "Internal storage", choose the destination folder, and tap "Move here".** That is it, when it works. The rest of this page is what happens when it is refused, when that name is taken, and when there are two hundred files.

## The documented steps

Google's help gives two ways to reach the file: "Under 'Categories,' select a category", or "Scroll to 'Storage devices.'" and "Tap Internal storage". From either, the rest is the same. If the folder you want does not exist yet: **Add new folder**, "Enter folder name in the pop-up", **Move to folder**.

On a Galaxy phone the app is My Files, and Samsung's caveat covers every OEM variation of these menus: "Available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider and software version."

## When it goes wrong

**It is refused, or the folder cannot be selected.** Apps built for Android 11 or later "can no longer use the `ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE` intent action to request access to" the root of internal storage, the root of "each SD card volume that the device manufacturer considers to be *reliable*", or "The `Download` directory" — Google scopes the rule that way itself: the SAF changes "take effect only if your app targets Android 11 or higher". Nor can such an app ask you to pick individual files out of `Android/data/` or `Android/obb/`. This is usually the operating system, [not the app](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/why-apps-cant-open-downloads-android-11).

**It is slow, or the SD card is not offered.** Within one filesystem a move is a rename and nothing travels; to a card or a USB device it has to be [a copy and then a delete](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/moving-a-file-is-copy-then-delete), so an interruption can leave it half done. When the card does not appear, Google's guidance is to check whether it was formatted as portable rather than internal storage; one set up as internal storage is not a second drive.

**A file with that name is already there.** Tools differ — some rename, some ask, some overwrite, and an overwrite is silent. And check which you tapped: "Move to" removes the original, "Copy to" does not.

## Doing it in bulk

Every move is a copy, a verification of that copy, and only then the removal of the original, so a failure at any step leaves the original untouched. Nothing is overwritten: a collision arrives as `name (1).ext`, contents compared byte for byte first, because equal sizes prove nothing. Every sort is recorded; the most recent one can always be put back, and Pro can undo any past sort, with no time limit.
