# Is there a Hazel alternative for sorting files on Android? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**Not Hazel itself: it is a Mac app, and Noodlesoft says it makes software "solely for the Mac" ([*About Noodlesoft*](https://www.noodlesoft.com/about), read 1 October 2026). What an Android phone can get is a handful of apps that each cover part of what Hazel does, usually the watching and moving, rarely the renaming or the reading of what is inside a file. Decide which part you actually used Hazel for, and the choice on Android gets much shorter.** One of the apps below, Adinand Auto File Sorter, is ours; this site belongs to it, and its entry says what it leaves out.

## What Hazel does on a Mac

Noodlesoft sums Hazel up as "Automated Organization for Your Mac." The core idea: "Hazel watches whatever folders you tell it to, automatically organizing your files according to the rules you create." Those rules can move files "based on name, date, type, what site it came from and much more", and Hazel can also "rename your files or sort them into subfolders based on name, date or whatever combination of attributes you choose." It manages the Trash too, and its App Sweep offers to remove the support files an application leaves behind ([*Hazel*, Noodlesoft](https://www.noodlesoft.com/), read 1 October 2026).

Version 6 went further. Noodlesoft's release notes say Hazel "can read text from non-OCRed PDFs and image files", and that a misfiled file can be put back: "right-click on it in Finder and select Revert" ([*What's new in Hazel 6*, Noodlesoft](https://www.noodlesoft.com/whats-new-in-hazel-6/), read 1 October 2026). As for other platforms, the company describes itself as "producing software solely for the Mac" ([*About Noodlesoft*](https://www.noodlesoft.com/about), read 1 October 2026).

## Hazel's ideas, one by one, on a phone

We set Hazel's feature list against two Android sorters: ours, and FilePipe, the most configurable app on [our comparison of Android sorters](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/best-app-to-sort-files-automatically-on-android). Everything said about FilePipe here comes from its Play listing ([*FilePipe: Auto Files Organizer*, Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.bikram.filepipe), read 1 October 2026).

- **Watching folders.** Both do it. FilePipe has you choose "source folders, file types, and a destination" for each rule. Ours watches Downloads out of the box and, with Pro, folders such as WhatsApp Documents, Telegram, Bluetooth and Screenshots, or any folder you pick.
- **Conditions on the name.** FilePipe accepts "Filename patterns (wildcards or RegEx)". Ours checks the extension, and a Pro rule can also match a word the file name contains.
- **Conditions on date and size.** FilePipe filters on "Minimum and maximum file age" and on file size. Ours has neither: it routes on the extension or a word in the name, and that is all.
- **Renaming.** This is where Hazel stays ahead. FilePipe renames only to settle a name clash ("skip, overwrite, or rename automatically"). Ours keeps the original name and adds (1), (2) only when a file of that name is already there.
- **Reading inside files.** Hazel 6 does. Ours never reads what is inside your files to sort them, and FilePipe's listing does not describe matching on file contents.
- **Putting things back.** Hazel has Revert. FilePipe lets you "Undo a run to restore files when possible". Ours offers undo after every sort: the most recent one for free, any past sort with Pro.
- **Clearing out old files.** A FilePipe rule can "move, copy or delete files", so an age filter plus delete comes near Hazel's habit of throwing out stale files. Its listing says nothing about an application's leftover support files, and ours does not hunt for them either. What ours does include is a free duplicate finder on Android 11 and later, whose removed copies wait in a trash folder for 7 days.

## Adinand Auto File Sorter (ours)

[Adinand Auto File Sorter](https://adinandsorter.com/) moves loose files from the folders it watches into one place, Downloads › Sorted Files, in subfolders named Documents, Images, Videos, Audio, Apps, Archives and Others. A move is a copy, then a check of the copy, then removal of the original, so a failure part-way leaves your file untouched. Sorting never deletes anything, and every sort is written to a history on the phone.

Tapping Sort Now is free and unlimited, with a preview of what will move. Pro is a single purchase, not a subscription, and adds sorting in the background while the app is closed, at intervals of 15 minutes, an hour, 6 hours or a day; the extra watched folders; your own rules; and undo for any earlier sort. Some phone makers' battery settings can stop background work, and the app shows you when that has happened.

Where a Hazel user will miss things:

- **One destination.** Everything lands under Downloads › Sorted Files. A WhatsApp document does not stay next to WhatsApp.
- **Top level only.** It sorts files sitting directly in a watched folder and never opens the folders inside it.
- **No renaming, no tags, no uploading.** It moves files; it does not change them.
- **Extension-only routing.** No date, size or content conditions, and no regular expressions.
- **Android 10 or later.** On Android 11 and later it needs All files access.

There are no ads, no accounts and no analytics, and the only network use is Google Play Billing. A demo on sample data runs from the first screen without touching your files.

## Which one, for a Hazel user

If your Hazel rules were mostly "this kind of file goes in that folder", ours covers it with the least set-up. If they leaned on age, size or name patterns, FilePipe's filters are nearer to what you had. If they renamed files or read inside them, nothing we have read about on Android does all of that; keep those jobs for the Mac.
