# How do I empty the trash on Android? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**There is no "the" trash on Android.** Each app that offers a safety net keeps its own, and each is emptied from inside that app. That is why deleting things in one place can leave the storage number where it was.

## The trashes to check <ul> <li>**Google Photos — Trash.** Google's path is **Collections** > **Trash** > **More** > **Empty Trash**, and "Photos and videos that you delete will stay in your trash for 30 days before they are permanently deleted" ([*Delete photos & videos*](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128858?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 23 September 2026).</li> <li>**Files by Google — Trash.** Tap the menu at the top left, choose **Trash**, select files and tap **Delete**. Google's retention is explicit: "Files remain in Trash for 30 days and then are automatically deleted" ([*Move files to Trash & restore files from Trash*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/10607740), read 23 September 2026).</li> <li>**Samsung — Recycle bin in My Files.** On Galaxy phones with One UI 6 the bins were brought together: "Users can now delete and restore files from My Files, Gallery and Voice Recordings directly from the Trash folder in My Files." The path is My Files > Recycle bin, and Samsung notes that "The recycle bin function cannot be turned off" ([*How to delete or restore files in the recycle bin in My Files*](https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/apps-services/the-updated-recycle-bin-feature-in-my-files-on-galaxy-devices-with-one-ui-6/), read 23 September 2026).</li> <li>**Google Drive — Trash**, which is cloud storage rather than phone storage. "Files you move to the Trash are deleted forever after 30 days" ([*Delete files in Google Drive*](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375102), read 23 September 2026).</li> <li>**Any other app you delete things in.** If it has its own recently-deleted list, that is one more place to look.</li> </ul>

## One thing that does not go to the trash <p>Google flags an exception in Files by Google: “Files deleted from "Junk files" card will be permanently deleted. They will not be moved to Trash” ([*Move files to Trash & restore files from Trash*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/10607740), read 23 September 2026). So the one-tap cleanup card has no grace period.</p>

## Phone storage or Google storage? <p>This is where most of the confusion sits. Drive is explicit: "Files in your Trash still count towards your storage until they are permanently deleted" ([*Delete files in Google Drive*](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375102), read 23 September 2026), and that storage is the Google Account allowance — "up to 15 GB of storage, which is shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos" ([*How your Google storage works*](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/9312312), read 23 September 2026). Google's Photos page does not say whether items sitting in the Photos trash still count against that allowance. Files by Google's Trash, by contrast, is a folder on the phone — Google's troubleshooting steps find it as ".FilesByGoogleTrash" under Internal storage. If the warning you saw was about Google storage, emptying the phone's file trash does not touch it. ## Before you empty anything <p>A trash is a decision you already made, with a grace period attached. The item most worth a second look is the photograph deleted on a bad day, so scroll through the Photos trash before emptying it — once it is emptied, Google says the items "can’t be restored" ([*Delete photos & videos*](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128858?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 23 September 2026).</p>

## The reason it fills up again <p>Our view: emptying bins is downstream work. What keeps generating them is a Downloads folder that accumulates faster than anyone files it, so the clear-out is a chore that comes back however thoroughly it was done.
