**Go folder by folder, in the order the clutter arrives — Downloads, screenshots, chat media — and at each stop decide what stays and where it lives before you delete anything.** This page is about the files you can see on an Android phone. App caches and "junk" are a different job with [their own page](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/clean-junk-off-my-android-phone), and if the goal is only to free space, [start there instead](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/free-up-space-on-android).

## Before you start: know what a delete costs
Files by Google's cleaning cards each end on a **Move x file(s) to Trash** button, and the app's Trash has a deadline: "Files remain in Trash for 30 days and then are automatically deleted." Its own warning about one card is the important exception — "Files deleted from "Junk files" card will be permanently deleted" ([*Move files to Trash & restore files from Trash*, Files by Google Help](https://support.google.com/files/answer/10607740?hl=en), read 8 October 2026). So a clean-up is reversible for a month, and only if you use the right button.

## 1. Downloads
The fullest folder on most phones, and the one where real documents hide among installers. Files by Google has a **Delete downloaded files** card on its Clean screen ([*Delete downloaded files*, Files by Google Help](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9764708?hl=en), read 8 October 2026); open the files you cannot name before you tick them. [What is safe to let go](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/should-i-clear-my-downloads-folder), and [how to file what you keep](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/organize-downloads-folder-on-android).

## 2. Screenshots
Google's **Old screenshots** card has a fixed rule: it covers "screenshots created or received more than 4 weeks ago" ([*Delete your screenshots*, Files by Google Help](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9808842?hl=en), read 8 October 2026). A screenshot of a booking reference is still worth keeping after four weeks; a screenshot of a meme rarely is, so scroll the selection rather than accepting it whole. [Where they are saved.](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-screenshots-saved-on-android)

## 3. Chat media
The **Delete WhatsApp media** card follows the same Select files, then Move to Trash pattern ([*Delete WhatsApp media files*, Files by Google Help](https://support.google.com/files/answer/10434654?hl=en), read 8 October 2026). Documents people sent you are the part to rescue first — [where WhatsApp keeps them](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-are-whatsapp-media-stored) and [where Telegram does](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/where-telegram-saves-files-on-android).

## 4. Duplicates
Google's duplicate card marks one copy for you: "The original file is marked with an “Original” badge. We recommend that you keep the original file" ([*Delete duplicate files*, Files by Google Help](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9764075?hl=en), read 8 October 2026). On a Galaxy, My Files has the same idea under **Analyze storage**, then **Duplicate files** ([*Manage and organize files saved on your Samsung Galaxy device*, Samsung Canada](https://www.samsung.com/ca/support/mobile-devices/manage-and-organize-files-saved-on-your-samsung-galaxy-device/), read 8 October 2026). Read Samsung's note on that list before tapping: "A confirmation is required to permanently delete the selected files." [How matching works, and why names lie.](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/find-duplicate-files-on-android)

## 5. The few very large files
Usually videos. [How to list them](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/find-the-largest-files-on-android) — and open each before removing it, because the biggest file is often the one you would most miss.

## 6. Last: empty the Trash, or let it run out
Nothing above frees space until the Trash is cleared or its 30 days pass. Wait a few days, check nothing you need went in, then [empty it](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/empty-the-trash-on-android). That order — decide, file, delete, then empty — is our recommendation, not a vendor's; it is simply the one that does not lose the only copy of something.

## Where Adinand Auto File Sorter helps, and where it does not
It covers the "file" step for the folders it watches — Download by default; WhatsApp Documents, Telegram, Bluetooth and Screenshots can be added on Pro. It moves the files sitting directly in them into `Downloads › Sorted Files`, split by file extension into Documents, Images, Videos, Audio, Apps, Archives and Others, so the decide-and-delete steps above become a look through one category at a time. Sorting never deletes anything. Its free duplicate finder (Android 11 and up) matches copies by their contents, always keeps one, and puts the ones you remove in a trash you can restore from for 7 days. It doesn't clear junk or app caches, and it doesn't find large files for you.
