**The best arrangement is two copies in two places: the phone, plus somewhere that does not fail when the phone does.** That is our view, not a vendor's — but the vendors' own pages make the choice of "somewhere" fairly clear once you read what each option keeps, shrinks or counts against a limit.

## Google Photos backup
Google's description is simple: turn on backup and you "automatically save your photos and videos to your Google Account", viewable from any signed-in device, and "to only one Google Account at a time" ([*Back up photos & videos*](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), Android, read 1 October 2026). It is not only the camera: "your chosen device folders are automatically backed up too", and each folder can be switched on or off under **Back up device folders**. The same page names a quiet failure worth checking for: "Backup might not work well if you have battery optimization turned on for the Photos app."

The limit is space. "Each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage, which is shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos" ([*How your Google storage works*](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/9312312?hl=en), Google One Help, read 1 October 2026). You choose how much each picture costs ([*Choose the backup quality of your photos & videos*](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), Android, read 1 October 2026):

**Original quality** — stored "in the same resolution that you took them with no change to their quality", and counted against your storage.

**Storage saver** — "If a photo is larger than 16 MP, it'll be resized to 16 MP", and "Videos higher than 1080p will be resized to high-definition 1080p". It also counts against storage; only items uploaded before June 1, 2021 are exempt.

So the honest trade is quality against how soon 15 GB runs out — Storage saver is not free storage any more.

## Samsung Gallery with Google Drive
On a Galaxy, Samsung documents its route through Settings: **Accounts and backup**, **Back up data** under Google Drive, make sure "Backup by Google One" is on, then switch on **Photos & videos** ([*Use the Gallery app on your Galaxy phone or tablet*](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002535/), read 1 October 2026). That ends up in the same Google account storage as above. The same guide still lists a OneDrive sync option; what has happened to it is covered on [our cloud-storage page](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/does-android-have-cloud-storage), so check there before relying on it.

## An SD card
Where the phone has a slot, a Galaxy can send new pictures straight to the card: open the Camera app, "Tap the settings cog", "Tap Storage location", "Tap SD card" ([*How to use SD card with your Samsung phone*](https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/using-an-sd-card/), Samsung UK, read 1 October 2026). Two catches from Samsung's US page: "Not all Samsung devices support MicroSD cards", and "Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature" ([*MicroSD cards and your Galaxy phone or tablet*](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10001928/), read 1 October 2026). Google adds a third that surprises people at clean-up time: "Deleted photos and videos might stay on a removable memory card" ([*Delete photos & videos*](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128858?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), Android, read 1 October 2026). A card inside the phone is more room, not a second copy — lose the phone and both go together. [Moving existing files onto one](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/move-files-to-sd-card) has its own steps.

## What we would set up

Backup on, with **Back up device folders** trimmed to the folders you would miss.

Original quality while the account has room; Storage saver once it does not, knowing large photos get resized.

Before deleting anything from the phone, confirm the status reads "Backup complete" — Google's wording for done.

An SD card for capacity if your phone has a slot, never as the only copy.

Freeing space on the phone afterwards is where most loss happens; [read what "Free up space" removes](https://adinandsorter.com/answers/google-photos-free-up-space) before you tap it.
