# What is the best app to automatically sort files into folders on Android? — Adinand Auto File Sorter

**"Automatic" means three different things in this category: sorting on a timer while the app is closed, asking you where each new file should go, or tidying only when you tap a button. Pick the kind first; the app follows.** This page is on the website of Adinand Auto File Sorter, which is one of the seven options below. We describe the other six from their own Google Play listings and help pages, read on 26 September 2026, and give ours the same treatment, limits included.

## What Android already does <p>Google's help page for its Files app describes it as a way "to free up space on your device and browse and share your files", with sections for cleaning, browsing, searching, renaming, and moving or copying files ([*How to use Files by Google*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9848742?hl=en), read 26 September 2026). That page does not describe any rule or schedule that sorts new files into folders by itself. ## Sorts on a schedule, in the background <ol> <li>**File Sorter: Organize Files** (Shevapro). The listing offers "Custom Rules" to "Define exactly where each file type belongs", and says File Sorter "works in the background so your storage stays clean without any input from you." On privacy: "Everything stays on your device. No uploads, no tracking, ever." ([*File Sorter : Organize Files*, Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shevapro.filesorter), read 26 September 2026.) The listing does not spell out which folders it watches or how often it runs.</li> <li>**FilePipe** (WizardWork). The most configurable of the group. Each rule picks source folders, file types and a destination, can "move, copy or delete files", can look inside subfolders as well, and "gets its own schedule". Filters cover filename patterns, size and age, and it says moved files "keep their original date and time". A history log lets you "Undo a run to restore files when possible" ([*FilePipe: Auto Files Organizer*, Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.bikram.filepipe), read 26 September 2026). Strong if you enjoy building rules; more set-up than the rest.</li> <li>**AI File Organizer: Offline**. Its description calls the app Smart File Organizer and says it sorts "by extension, name pattern, date, size, or MIME type", with an "on-device kNN classifier" for files no rule matches. Its files are organised "into subfolders right where they live", and background runs happen "on a schedule you choose (15–120 minutes)" ([*AI File Organizer: Offline*, Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartorganizer.app), read 26 September 2026). Pick it if you want files to stay in the folder they arrived in. That classifier is specific to it; ours doesn't use AI at all.</li> <li>**Batch Rename and Organize**. A renaming tool that also moves. The listing covers sorting "into folders automatically by date, location, or metadata", folder monitoring "to rename or move files as soon as they're saved", Tasker support and SMB network storage, and it lists "Real-time folder monitoring" among the premium features ([*Batch Rename and Organize*, Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.duong.picturemanager), read 26 September 2026). Best for photo libraries where file names and dates matter.</li> <li>**Adinand Auto File Sorter** (ours). Described below, because the limits need more than a sentence.</li> </ol>

## Asks you, file by file <p>**File Navigator** (Janek Zangenberg) takes the opposite approach. When a new file of a type you chose appears, it "sends you instant notifications", and "With a simple tap from the notification, you can select the destination folder for the new file" ([*File Navigator*, Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.w2sv.filenavigator), read 26 September 2026). You stay in control of every move, at the cost of a tap each time.</p>

## Adinand Auto File Sorter, in detail <p>It moves loose files out of the folders it watches into one place, Downloads › Sorted Files, with a subfolder per kind: Documents, Images, Videos, Audio, Apps, Archives and Others. Every move copies the file, checks the copy, and only then removes the original, so a failure leaves the original where it was. It never overwrites a file with the same name. Sorting never deletes anything, and each sort is recorded in a history on the phone.</p> <ul> <li>**Free:** tap Sort Now as often as you like, with a preview of what will move first. Undo covers your most recent sort. A duplicate finder is included (Android 11 and later).</li> <li>**Pro, a one-time purchase with no subscription:** sorting in the background even when the app is closed, every 15 minutes, hourly, every 6 hours or once a day; extra watched folders such as WhatsApp Documents, Telegram, Bluetooth and Screenshots; custom rules by extension or by a word in the file name; and undo for any past sort.</li> </ul> <p>What it does not do, which matters when you compare it with the list above:</p> <ul> <li>It decides by file extension, or by a word in the file name if you write a rule. It doesn't use AI, and it doesn't sort by date or size.</li> <li>It only sorts files sitting directly in a watched folder, never inside their sub-folders. FilePipe can go deeper.</li> <li>Everything ends up in Downloads › Sorted Files. A WhatsApp document doesn't stay next to WhatsApp; if you want files sorted where they are, AI File Organizer: Offline says it does that.</li> <li>Out of the box it watches Downloads only; other folders are a Pro feature.</li> <li>Background sorting depends on your phone letting it run. Some manufacturers' battery settings stop background jobs, and the app shows when that has happened instead of pretending otherwise.</li> <li>It needs Android 10 or later, and it doesn't exist for iPhone.</li> </ul> <p>There are no ads, no accounts and no analytics; the only network use is Google Play Billing. The first screen offers a demo with sample data, and nothing on your phone is touched while you try it.</p>

## Four questions before you grant All files access <p>Sorting means moving files that other apps created, so apps like these usually need Android's All files access. Batch Rename and Organize and File Navigator both say so in their Play listings (read 26 September 2026), and ours requires it on Android 11 and later. Before granting it to any of them, find out:</p> <ul> <li>Where do files end up: one central folder, or sorted in place?</li> <li>Does it look inside sub-folders, and can you stop it?</li> <li>Can you see what will move before it moves, and undo it afterwards?</li> <li>Does anything leave the phone?</li> </ul> <p>If a listing does not answer one of those, that is worth knowing too.
